Chapter 16
Startled, Dean and Sam both looked at Trinity. "What?" they said in sync.
Dean continued, "You told us your birthday was August 23."
She shrugged. "I wanted to distance myself from my past as far as I could. August 23 was just the day you guys happened to stop by and whisk me off."
Sam started typing madly. "Okay. Uh...says here only one kid was born that day, but before anyone could sign a birth certificate, both the parents and the kid were gone."
"Great," Trinity sighed. "Guess that's why Dad never let me see my birth certificate, or took me to the hospital. Given I'm a quick healer, but..."
"So what do we do now?" Dean said, ignoring his sister's comment.
"Talk to Linda?" Sam suggested.
"Great," Trinity sighed.
Dean looked up at her. "What? You can be there, just make sure she doesn't recognize you."
She rolled her eyes. "Dean, really. I thought you would've figured out at least this much by now: shifters see through façades, like mine now. I could look like a yorkie and she would still see me as I am."
"You figure this out from reading that book?"
She chuckled. "No. I, uh, I had cousins when I was a kid. They thought since they were twins, they could see each other even in a different form. I never corrected them."
He nodded, though upset at the reminder that Trinity wasn't really their blood sister, and she was instead family to a bunch of raging lunatics.
"So Sammy and I go see Linda and just hope that she's gracious enough to tell us who your mother is? I don't think so."
"Nope," said Trinity. "You and I go talk to Linda, and Sammy takes her husband, Rick. Rick's a softie," she added to Sam. "He's a huge jerk, but he's a softie. Tell him you're my brother, and he'll tell you anything you want to know."
Sam nodded. "Sounds good to me. But how do you know Linda's going to tell you anything?"
"She hates me too much not to tell me what a monster my mother was. One question, and she's gonna spill her guts. Trust me." She grinned.
Dean nodded. "Fantastic. But it's Sammy's turn to sleep on the floor."

Trinity rolled over and opened her eyes. She just sighed. "Dean, I thought you were sleeping on the couch."
He smirked. "Yeah, well that didn't work out, did it?" He was still half-asleep, she could tell, and worriedly she lightly pulled on the hand that was stuffed under his pillow. With it came out a silver knife, and she scooted away from him.
"You crawled into my bed and decided that having a silver knife was a good idea?" she hissed quietly, since Sam was still asleep.
"Protection, Trin. I wouldn't hurt you, asleep or not."
"Yeah, well now I'm awake." She plucked the blade from his hand and tossed it to the floor.
He sighed and rubbed his eyes, sitting up beside her. "You know that's in case someone else broke in, right?"
"Duh. But it still makes me uncomfortable."
"Trin-"
She laughed. "Calm down, Dean. You're freaking out over nothing. Good grief, big brother." She, unlike Sam, knew Dean well enough to tell what was bothering him, not just if something was. So she knew that he was worried she was going to leave and live instead with Linda and Rick, and he would keep worrying until this was over.
