It was nearing 8 o’clock and was just beginning to get dark. I had spent my day at the bay and now I slyly changed in my car’s backseat. Slipping the strapless dress on, along with the high heels, I got out of the car and practiced walking. I did well until I opened the driver side door. My feet slipped out from under me and I caught myself on the door.

Grumbling, I got in the car and quickly braided my hair off to the side. When you don’t leave your’ house you need something to do and I became very good at braided. I did a fishtail braid to perfection and made my way to the party. On the way I prayed I wouldn’t fall in these heels when I got there. The house wasn’t hardtop find since it was huge. The yard rolled down in a slight hill and the house wasn’t too far from the road, but it was quaintly set back. A brick path led up to the white home. It looked to be two stories, but was very large still as it went back. There were windows strewn across the house’s front and a dim light shown through each of the curtain sets.

Others were pulling in when I did and the street sides were full of parked cars. Stepping out of mine I tried to get myself to feel more confident, with each step the confidence grew and I felt like I knew what I was doing. I at least hadn’t tripped on the way up the brick path so I was off to a good start.

I knew there were multiple people staring at me, but I wasn’t sure if I looked good or if they just didn’t recognize me. With the amount of people here, there was no way they could all be so closely knit.

“Name?” The man at the door asked. He was tall and lean looking. I saw him glance at my chest before I had the chance to answer. I ignored his action and tried to tell myself it was a good thing so I would blend in.

“Scarlett Herding.” I gave him a half smile and he nodded, letting me in after checking a list.

Entering the house, the inside was just as beautiful as the outside had been. The room had high ceilings, but they were low enough it was welcoming. The room was full of guests and this was when I realized, I honestly didn’t know who the Linkins were. I didn't want to bump into them and have them ask any questions, so I hurried along.

There were people my age laughing and young children weaving between adult legs in their games. People chatted and I felt a swelling feeling inside my head, until I started hearing individual conversations. It was like certain voices were amplified just for me, but it made my head throb and I wanted to get out of the crowded room.

I squeezed my way along the pale yellow walls and made my way to the next room. Gradually the rooms grew less crowded and more homey. I took my phone out and read a memo I had made myself about things to look for in others like me. There were a few things about the shadows being more attractive and things of that nature, but the only thing I thought I could use at the moment was the liking for crystal.

I hoped that the glasses here would be crystal since the Linkin's had so much money to spend on things like that. Even my home had had crystal glassware. Hurrying through corridors I tried to get to a room further back in the house. Less people meant I could talk to them more directly and maybe get more information.

The room I entered had a fire place that lit the space, along with a dim lamp by the door. The carpet was a deep red and matched the grayish walls. There were a few men on the sofas all talking and I came in to sit in one of the adjacent chairs.

Their conversation came to a halt and one of the men introduced themselves. He stood while I took my seat and gave a genuine smile. “Hello, I’m Steven.”
