Tenten was always the second to arrive at the office after Neji. Sometimes she thought he slept at the office but it was really none of her business. Today, she found him crouched at a corner, hugging his knees.
His long brown hair draped over his head like a curtain, shielding him from the outside world and hiding the tears Tenten was sure he shed. Her heart broke for him. He was clearly going through something that he could not say out loud.
Tenten dropped her bag on her work desk and went to sit on the floor next to him. Her hand rested on his back in what she hoped was a comforting gesture. He didn't shrug her off. No word was said, just silent comfort. She hoped that her presence would comfort him.
Her heart broke further when she felt his shoulders quaking with silent sobs. She wished there was more she could do for him. He was so sad.
Neji finally stopped crying but his head didn't leave his knees. Instead he began to speak. "I've always aimed high. I've always wanted to own a business cooperation, to inherit my father's company. Things never went as I envisioned. My father dies and all of a sudden I am swimming in debt."
This was the most amounts of words Neji had said at a go but the words had her heart clenching. It must have been so hard on him. What he said next, however, made her heart shatter into millions of pieces.
"I've been paying debts since I was eighteen, couldn't further my education, can't get a decent job. But you know what? Years later I find that my uncle is the one to sabotage my father's business and make him bankrupt. My father died from the stress, a stroke." Neji choked on his tears. "He was my father's twin and yet...he killed him! I've become like this because of my uncle. I'd never forgive him."
Now Tenten could see the reason behind his behaviour. Why he would stare into the distance in melancholy. Why he would fret and get agitated. Why he never smiled. He had gone through a lot.
She understood that now.
