When he spoke.

She was back again, sitting next to him for lunch. He never once told her 'thank you' for the free lunches he got from her but it was okay. She understood how embarrassing it must be for him receiving food from a fellow intern. It was better to assume that they were just sharing lunch.

No words were exchanged between them, just silence and food. But Tenten enjoyed the silent moments. Somewhat. The women at the office were too gossip-y and the men only talked about games she didn't understand.

Compared to those, Neji-san's eerie silence was comforting.

They were surveyors. Surveyors in training in her case. There was absolutely no need for Tenten to be under apprenticeship at such a place, but she was working for an admission into a college of science. She could as well gain extra knowledge and maybe make extra cash while she waited for her admission to go through.

While her floor plans and penmanship were not that bad, she discovered one day that Neji-san's was better than hers. It was surprising how good and neat his work was. She was honestly amazed and she voiced it.

"Wow, you're good." Tenten said in amazement. "Could you teach me how you do it? I'm okay but I'm nowhere near as good as you are."

His silvery eyes met with hers for a brief minute before they shifted back to his work. Tenten thought that he was not going to acknowledge her request but then he shifted a bit on his seat. Creating space for her. An invitation.  Tenten grinned and went to bring her work materials to his worktable.

She liked the silence between them but it was getting too loud. She had never heard his voice save for the time she asked him what the date was. So she took their relationship (whatever was between them) a step further and poked his cheek.

Neji-san's eyes blinked rapidly, disoriented by her sudden boldness to touch him, before looking her in the face. The woman simply smiled at him. "Say something, you're too quiet." She spoke.

The man only turned back to his work and silently instructed her to do the same. She pouted. Disappointed. But then she smiled. Because he said something to her.

"You're weird."
