Elise Pov
"Make for the shore!" Thorin said as we used our hands to paddle to the little beach at the end of the river. We got on the beach and climbed out to the ground. oh sweet land, I missed you.
"Kili's wounded. His leg needs binding." Fili said as he examined his brothers leg on the beach. "There's an Orc pack on our tail. We keep moving." Thorin said as I'm getting the gauze out for Kili's leg. "keep moving to where?" I asked looking at him.
"to the Mountain. We're so close my love." he said with bright eyes. "A lake lies between us and that mountain. We have no way to cross it." Balin said pointing at the lake. "Can we go around?" I asked wrapping Kili's leg. "The Orcs will run us down, as sure as daylight. We've no weapons to defend ourselves. Bind his leg, quickly. You have two minutes." I nodded in response to Thorin and went back to treating. As we're getting together a man shows up and the Kili grabbed a rock to throw but that resulted in the bowman shooting the rock out of his hand with his bow.
"Do it again... and you're dead." Kili simply nodded and leaned against Fili for balance.
"Excuse me... but you're from Lake-town, if I'm not mistaken. That barge over there... it wouldn't be available for hire, by any chance?" Balin asked as held his hands in surrender and peace. "What makes you think I would help you?" The bowman responded walking back to his boat with all of us following.
"Those boots have seen better days. As has that coat. No doubt you have some hungry mouths to feed. How many bairns?" Balin asked going into kind grandpa mode. The bowman looked at him as he's moving the barrels on the boat. "A boy and two girls." I felt a kind smile form on my face now thinking about children. I've always wanted to be a mother.
"And your wife, I imagine she's a beauty." The bowman got visually sad.
" Aye. She was."
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..." Balin went to continue but Dwalin interrupted him. "Oh, come on, come on. Enough of the niceties." I gave him a scolding face as Thorin held my hand. "what's your hurry?" Our human friend asked looking at us.
"what's it to you?" "I would like to know who you are... and what you are doing in these lands."
"We are simple merchants from the Blue Mountains... journeying to see our kin... in the Iron Hills." Balin said sweetly. "simple merchants, you say?" He said eyeing all of us. I decided it's time for me to play the damsel in distress card. "We need food... supplies, weapons. Will you help us?" I asked with a earnest expression as I stood there in my wet dress from the barrel river ride we were just on. He looked at me while leaning against a barrel.
"I know where these barrels came from." "what of it?" Thorin responded putting his arm around my waist in a protective fashion which is loving and understandable. "I don't know what business you had with the Elves... but I don't think it ended well. No one enters Lake-town but by leave of the Master. All his wealth comes from trade with the Woodland Realm. He would see you in irons before risking the wrath of King Thranduil." I heard Thorin tell Balin to offer him more money.
"I'll wager there are ways to enter that town unseen." The bowman nodded. "Aye. But for that... you would need a smuggler." Balin walked close to him.
"For which we would pay double." The bowman smiled and welcomed us on the boat."Watch out! What are you trying to do, drown us?" Dwalin said as the boatman came close to a rock almost hitting it. I'm just sitting on a crate by the edge writing in my jounal of what's happening as Balin is collecting the money. I already gave him mine. Kili is doing ok but we need to thoroughly examine his leg because it didn't look good when I was wrapping it.
"I was born and bred on these waters, Master Dwarf. If I wanted to drown you... I would not do it here." He said calmly and I had to chuckle at that which caused Thorin to look at me. "what's so amusing?" I responded while writing. "nothing love." "I've had enough of this lippy Lakeman. I say we throw him over the side and be done with it."
Dwalin said annoyed.
"Bard, his name's Bard." Bilbo said exasperated. "how do you know?" "Uh, I asked him." he said with a smug smile. "I don't care what he calls himself. I don't like him."
"We do not have to like him. We simply have to pay him. Come on now, lads. Turn out... your pockets." Balin said as the guys gave all their money to the cause.
"How do we know he won't betray us?" Dwalin whispered to Thorin as they're standing next to me. "We don't." Thorin replied simply. "There's... just a wee problem. We're 10 coins short." We all looked at Gloin. "Gloin. Come on. Give us what you have." "Don't look to me. I have been bled dry... by this venture. What have I seen... for my investment? Naught but misery and... grief and...." He trained off and I looked where he's looking and saw the Mountain. Erebor.
"Bless my beard. Take it. Take all of it." Gloin said in awe handing Balin the coins.
I'm just in awe. it's beautiful and mysterious. I felt Thorin come up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. "there's home. Our Kingdom." I smiled thinking about what the future has to hold.
