Lying on Anthony's chest with his arms round her waist, all of Rosemary's worries momentarily vanished. Her emotions dwelt in the twilight of passion. He made her feel like the center of his universe. In his arms, she had little doubt in her mind that he had ever stopped loving her. But not long after she collapsed on his chest, he released her.
Not quite recovered, Anthony got up, picking up his clothes from the floor.
Rosemary sat up, frowning. "Can't you stay in bed a little longer?"
"There's people down there, most likely waiting for me, so no, I can't," he said.
"Don't do that."
"Do what?"
She met his gaze. "Don't treat me like I'm nothing," she said. " Why can't you stay and talk to me?"
He scoffed, fiercely pulling up his pants. "Don't be stupid," he said. " I can't sit here and 'talk' while a bunch of idiots wreck my house."
She threw aside the sheets, crawling to the foot of his bed. Wanting nothing more than to be the light of his eyes, she looked up at him. "This is our moment, Anthony. You're ruining it. You have no idea how long I've been waiting to feel this way again. This was special, and I missed it. I know you did, too. Please, stay. Why can't you?"
He turned his disdainful gaze to her. "We fucked, its pretty simple. Are you going to try to analyze our sex now?"
Rosemary lacked the will, or the strength to hold back tears. Disgusted, she wiped them off, glaring at him. He turned his back to her, walking to the door. She climbed out of the bed and gathered her clothes.
He left the room before she finished dressing. She didn't understand his constant mood changes. What she had experienced was unknown to her. Anthony had never been that cold to her after sex. Convinced that he was hiding something from her, and wrestling with the idea of him seeing someone else, she followed him.
The atmosphere had changed downstairs, several guests were staring at their phones, others formed circles around each other, gossiping about something which ceased to be important the moment she entered the room. Several of her friends argued about something in a corner.
She ignored the behavior of those around her, and walked up to him. He had a glass of rum and coke in his hand that was nearly empty.
Kathy Stevens, an anorexic cheerleader who Rosemary had never liked , was holding up her phone to his face.
Only inches away, Rosemary watched him. As if sensing her presence, he lifted his head and focused his stony gaze on her. At that moment, Rosemary realized he had only left the room to get away from her.
" I'm leaving," she said, turning around before he could respond. She hurried out of the house, feeling at the verge of a nervous breakdown.
The cool spring air caressing her skin was enough to make her burst into uncontrollable tears. Finally, she understood he didn't love her, that, for some unexplained reason, he could hardly stand her presence. Memories of how she had behaved during dinner with Chris creeped into her mind. The falseness of Anthony's actions were identical. She could now see that he had put on a show in front of his friends, that he had no intention of changing his attitude.
Initially, Cassie's car appeared empty, and Rosemary sighed. On a closer look, she saw Foley and Cassie sitting in the back. Thinking that she had walked in on a sexual act between them, she turned to leave. But upon seeing her, Cassie got out of the car.
"Don't go," she said, grasping her arm. "Are you okay?"
Rosemary shook her head, and began to sob. Immediately hugging her, Cassie cried, too.
