Over the next two weeks, Anthony didn't take Chris' calls. They'd cross path in the hallway between class breaks, but Anthony failed to acknowledge him. One particular afternoon, Chris saw him standing outside the schools main entrance with a crowd around him. He was handing out invitations for a party he was throwing at his place over the weekend. Girls gushed and blushed as he shoved purple invites into their hands.
Chris saw Rosemary was absent and thought about confronting him. As Chris approached him, Anthony glanced at his swim team buddies, grinning widely.
"What do you want?" Anthony said, looking over chris shoulders at students walking out.
"Can we speak for a minute?" Chris said, his voice trembling.
Anthony shook his head. "I'm busy, now. Maybe later."
Chris felt the stares. His heart was beating fast. "It's important," he said. His hands were sweating.
Anthony's eyes pierced him with an intense gaze. Although, his facial expression did not change, Chris could tell he was upset.
"Did I forget to tell you? Oh yeah, I don't need you to tutor me anymore. My parents hired a professional," His tone was flat and dry, but the side of his mouth was curled up into a smile.
Chris opened his mouth to say something, and quickly shut it. Tears gathered at the brim of his eyes as he stared at Anthony.
Anthony turned away, leaning forward to hand a sophomore cheerleader an invitation. Chris was shoved to the side as more students came around to get their invitation or check out what all the fuzz was about.
Later that night, Chris stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror with a look of regret in his eyes. The feeling of release was overwhelming. His cuts bled a crimson truth. Cutting distracted him from the hurt he felt inside. The hurt no doctor could ever mend. He wanted him, but he was not wanted in return. It was so simple and yet so painful at the same time.
"I'm worthless," he said, running cold water over his wrist.
With Anthony, he felt fufilled as if he found where he belonged. He was convinced they made love. Anthony had kissed him, caressed him, held him and whispered sweet nothings into his ear. He never thought it was possible to share that kind of bond with any one before.
He had expected Anthony to avoid him after their first night together, but not this time. He thought they shared an unspoken agreement. He loved him. What had changed?
He shut the faucet and went to his bed room. Outside his window, he heard the sound of a familiar voice. Switching off the light, he closed the door behind him. Peeking his head out the window, he saw Rosemary sitting on a lounge chair with her cell phone to her ear.
"I know, I know, but I don't think I can go," she said, curling a loose strand of hair around her finger. "My parents are on the watch, right now, especially my mom. She's starting to freak me out. But you have no idea how much I want to go, baby boo."
She was talking to Anthony. Chris heaved a loud sigh in fustration. Baby- boo. She had never even seen the Anthony Chris had experienced. Had Anthony ever kissed her as passionately as he had kissed him?
With his mind still fuzzy from the lost of blood, he grabbed his phone and sent Anthony a hasty text.
He waited patiently by the window.
"Okay, well, call me back, bye." she said.
Chris's phone started blaring loudly and she looked up towards his window. He jumped back, laughing.
Anthony's name flashed on the caller id screen. Chris let it go to voice mail, licking his lips with the sweetness of revenge. Again, his ring tone went off two more times before Chris decided to answer.
"Hello, baby-boo."
"What the fuck do you think you're doing threatening me? Don't you dare tell her a word-"
Chris cut him off with laughter.
"What the hell are you laughing at?" His voice was so loud that Chris had to pull the phone away from his ear.
"Why haven't you called me back or answered your calls?" Chris said, the laughter was gone from his voice.
Anthony was silent on the other end, but he was breathing heavily, bursting with rage."Are you stalking me now, is that it? You're not going to leave me alone, now. Do I have my own little stalker? We fucked, get over it!"
"You and I, we did more than that," Chris said." We didn't just fuck, Anthony, you know that, I know that. Why do you keep ignoring me as if we never happened? It hurts, yeah, it hurts a lot." Tears fell down his face. He tried to stop himself from sounding desperate, but he felt very much that way.
"I told you I didn't want anything serious." Anthony said, pausing a minute to let it sink in." What did you expect? Did you think I was going to fall in love with you? That's never going to happen! I'm not a faggot. I have a future, I have ambition. I'm gonna be someone, and you're insignificant! This entire town is! Learn your place and back off! If you even give me the impression that you're going to tell anyone, I'll make sure that you become the biggest laughing stock in school. I'll make everyone think you're an obsessed lunatic with dead daddy issues-"
"Son of a bitch, shut your mouth! Shut up! You know nothing about my dad! Shut your spoiled, filthy mouth!" He slammed the phone against the wall. The back popped opened and the battery fell out. He sobbed loudly, but he didn't care if any one could hear him.
He wanted to die right there and then.
