I couldn't wrap any of the events that just happened together in my mind. Violet proved very defensive, yet very capable of warming up and goofing off, even if it was mean-spirited at times. I saw right through her defense though. She seemed to be someone who used to be one of the sweet ones, but something must've happened. There had to be deeper reasons to her secrets other than her just being a celebrity. This Shane guy that was mentioned really seemed to get under her skin, whoever that was. If I could figure out a way to break through that barrier, then it would be most beneficial for William and her. But, I had to admit, deep down I was really enjoying doing this for William. I wanted to be the one to figure her out and it was really fun trying to. I always loved a challenge. Competition is what drove me most. It's one of the key "it" factors in playing football. Violet intrigued me though, and it wasn't just because of the secrets. She was intelligent in many areas and she seemed like she could actually be really cool if she loosened up.
"What are you thinking about so intensely over there?" Mary asked with a smile.
I returned to reality. "Huh? Oh! Just strategizing how I'm going to get William and Violet together. It's not going to be easy."
I visited Mary at her sorority house for a while after Violet safely left in her runaway SUV. She was walking me back to my dorm before heading to a friend's dorm to study. I already gave her the lowdown on my task from William, which she found hysterical. Which, you didn't have to think about it for very long to realize how very unlikely I was going to get the Violet Adair to go out with a William. But hey, all it takes is a try. I almost got William mentioned, if the paparazzi hadn't killed the conversation. I knew I'd get another shot at it eventually, but I wanted to keep chipping at that wall of hers more before doing so. The wrong moment could be disastrous.
"Leave it to Will to pick a celebrity to try and get serious with," she said with a chuckle.
I grinned. "Yeah. And leave it to him to pick me to wingman him."
"You didn't have to say yes you know."
"I know. But he's one of my best buds. I figured I'd do something nice for him. Besides, he needs to get off the singles list, for the sake of all the girls that go here. We'd be doing them a service."
Mary giggled in agreement and I smiled. My mind floated to Violet and the sarcastic, witty comments she would retort in reply had we been having this conversation instead. My chest swelled, trying to cage in a giant smile. I shook my head to brush off the feeling.
"I don't know her very well, obviously, but she seems troubled. Though, I think she has always been troubled. I don't know how someone so beautiful could be so rude," Mary said.
"What do you mean? How has she always been troubled?"
"Well, one of my roommates is a massive Scarlett Violets fan. And she said that Violet is known as The Blue Queen."
"The Blue Queen? I don't understand, what does that mean?"
"She explained that the media dubs her that because she only writes about pain. She's never written a love song. So, for the most part, any song they sing that's sad, Violet wrote it. I don't know about you, but that makes me think she's troubled. Possibly always has been."
I honestly didn't know what to make of this information. Maybe a little music will help, Violet said. Maybe listening to their music would help me understand her better. That was a good start I thought.
I shrugged. "Maybe. Or maybe she's just misunderstood. I feel that happens all the time with celebrities. You never really know them or their story, you know?" Football was different. All people cared about was your stats, your skills, and your wins. Unless you were one of the greats, like Tom Brady or Drew Brees.
