I woke with a jolt as the unmistakable sound of a gunshot echoed through my head. Sitting up my silk sheets slide from my sweat covered body. Letting out a shaky breath I bring my hands and rubbed my face vigorously.
The last memory I have of my mother has been on constant replay almost every night for the last twelve years.
"I hate those dreams." My wolf Vala rings in my head. I feel her stretch than shake out her silver fur. "Me too." I sigh.
Throwing the covers off I slipped out of bed and head for the shower to wash away the ruminates of my nightmare.
Just as my hand reaches the door to the bathroom, I hear a knock on my door.
"Ariella! You better be awake you're going to be late for...."
I pull my bedroom door open immediately meeting the hazel eyes of beta Ben the same hazel eyes of my father. My uncle is what you would expect from a Beta wolf; strong, unyielding end of muscles. His six foot five tall frame towering over my five foot eight height. Chocolate brown hair hangs just above his eyebrows.
"Training." I finish for him. He gives me a pointed look. "I'll be down in ten uncle."
"Another nightmare?" He gives me a sympathetic look as his eyes flicker down to my sweat covered t-shirt.
Ever since I came to the blue mountain warrior pack when I was eight my uncle the Beta of the pack has looked out for me like I'm his own pup. He met his mate Katina who happens to be the Alpha's sister a few years before my arrival and had a pup not long after that.
He's been super stressed; his hands have been full these last few weeks with his son Tate.
Tate is expected to shift for the first time any day now. When you're close to your first shift you can become very aggressive and unpredictable as your wolf pushes through and settles into your soul.
Some humans can't handle their wolfs and the wolf quickly takes strength from its counterpart forcing a shift. Once this happens your human side is unable to get the upper hand and the wolf reverts to its primitive state ultimately becoming a rogue. Although this is not the only way to become rogue, it happens. This is why we train at a very young age, so we can build up our human strength both mentally and physically to prepare for our wolf.
"I'm fine." I divert my gaze hoping he doesn't press further.
He doesn't but I can see his eyes flicker with worry. I can sense his wolf wants him to press further to make sure I really am okay but thankfully he doesn't and just nods his head.
"Don't be late." He turns to walk away and I quickly close the door and head to the bathroom to shower.
Stripping myself of my damp clothing, I turn the shower on and glance in the mirror waiting for the water to warm.
My long chocolate brown hair cascades down past my breast in tangled waves. My body is a well toned work of art. Slender but each and every muscle is well defined but not in a bulky way.
I stare into my silver eyes for only a moment. It hurts to see my mother's eyes so soon after waking.
Instead I glance at the tattoo adorning my right inner bicep. Three vertical thin intricate circles stacked on top of each other; each intercepting at its base to represent beginner, intermediate, and expert.
I trace the two vertical lines within the expert circle the larger of the three, the lines come to points to represent the canines of a wolf, indicating a warrior rank.
