Vickie POV
I woke up to the dim light of a cloudy winter's day. I worked the morning shift today as well as David so he would be giving me a ride.
I got ready quickly tying my hair into its normal knot throwing on jeans, a t-shirt, running shoes, and a track jacket.
When I got done my mom was already gone and David's Honda was in its place. When I got in he had coffee waiting for me "Do you want me to pay for that?" I asked him "No it's fine," he answered.
I was waiting for the question he really wanted to ask. "Did anything happen last night?" he finally asked.
"Just the normal banging on the walls."
He shook his head probably trying to think of another plan to get rid of this stalker that would get him hurt.
When we arrived at work we were the only ones there. I put my stuff in my locker while David turned on all the lights unlocking the doors
A few minutes later the kennel supervisor Loral and another caregiver Zack showed up.
I was't sure what was wrong with me today. I felt like there was something missing from me. I always felt kind of weird and out of step but this feeling wasn't an everyday thing as I felt like a lost soul. David asked what was wrong a few times but my answer was always "I don't really know." He believed this answer because he knew I suffered from this a lot and knew that it would pass soon. Only it didn't pass as quickly as I had hoped it would and even the owner of the shelter asked if something was wrong and she didn't know anything about my personal life like David and Loral did.
Even though I had my back to him as I was making a bowl of cat food I could feel David's concerned stare on me from where he stood on break with Zack.
As annoying as his questions could get I was glad David looked out for me the way he did since I wasn't used to people caring like he does or showing concern for my emotional state.
The way my mom saw things if it wasn't a physical illness or wound that a doctor could mend or give medicine for then there wasn't anything wrong with the person. David knew for himself that you could get illness of the heart too and no doctor could fix them.
I heard someone coming up behind me and David's voice asked ''Do you still want me to come look at your sink?'' David's hobby and second job was fixing stuff so about a mouth after he started working here we worked out a deal. He fixed stuff for me for free and I babysat his daughter Carly for free.
''Yeah its still leaking pretty bad. I tried the plumbers tape but it didn't fix it.''
''Okay no problem.''
''When do you want me to come over to babysit Carly?''
''Do you have plans on friday night?'' he asked.
I rolled my eyes and answered ''When do I ever have plans?''
''Right. You really should get out and try to meet someone. Maybe a relationship would be good for you,'' he said.
''Maybe it would be horrible for me and besides I told you my mom wouldn't let me date.''
''So don't tell her.''
''She's a cop in a small town, she would've figured it out.'' David thought that if I found a boyfriend I would feel less lonely even tough. He'd been through his share of bad break ups and knew that I wasn't sad about the lack of guys who found me attractive.
I've been told I'm pretty but I don't know if I should believe it seeing that the only guy who has ever said that to me and didn't mean it in a perverted way was David. I thought back on what he'd said.
I was hanging out with him one day after our shift and one of the lobby workers son's kept walking by staring at me so I asked David. "I wonder why that kid always stares at me?"
"He's just a kid and doesn't know what to do with himself around a pretty girl," he'd said. That was the first time anyone said anything nice to me in a long time.
"Look I know you don't believe this but one day you'll find a guy who isn't a jackass," David interrupted my thoughts.
Sam's POV.
I had to pick Zack up from his job at the animal shelter today. I didn't really mind since all I usually do is wander around the woods.
When I walked into the small warm lobby there was no one there and a sign on the desk read "Closed." I walked to one of the doors at the back of the lobby and fallowed a man's voice into a little room. There was a man filling up a water jug leaning against the counter and next to him was a pretty girl. She had dark green eyes, shoulder length light blonde hair with dark brown highlights, and olive toned skin. She was very beautiful. She was the girl from the car wreck. They hadn't seen me yet and she was laughing and talking with the man. I wondered if he was her boyfriend even though he looked a little old for her.
"Hello I'm here to pick up Zack?" The girl jumped but responded. "Alright I'll help you find him," she said as she walked off and I assumed I was suppose to follow her.
She led me to an outbuilding that read staff only on it. "Wait here," she said as she went inside.
She back a moment later with Zack behind her. When inside she turned back to the man who touched her shoulder and whispered in her ear. It sounded like "He's not one of them?" She shook her head no.
Once Zack got into my car and closed the door I asked him "Who was that girl?"
"Vickie, she's the cat caregiver. Why?"
"I think I know her from a while ago."
"She's not a vampire is she?"
"No I think I saved her from a car wreak about a year ago."
"She was in a car wreck, she still had the stitches when she started here. I overheard her telling David, the guy she was with a minute ago, that no one knew how she survived."
"She survived because I gave her my blood....so is that guy David like her boyfriend or something?"
"I don't think so but they are very close."
I would have to find a way to meet her, to get to know her. I wasn't sure what was going on. Did I like her? Was that why I saved her in the first place? Was this some kind of love at first sight?
