"They killed you."

Lydia sprinted inside, screaming out. "Mommy! Mom!"

She continued to sob, unable to be released from this panicked state. Her strawberry-blonde hair was a mess upon her head, each strand knotted together in several small heaps. Her mascara had smudged around her eyes. Lydia collapsed on her couch, overwhelmed.

The house was cold, making her breath look like smoke. She shivered in the darkness. Lydia hugged her knees tightly, cradling herself. Saliva clung to her throat, choking her.

Everything was a blur. The events of the night seemed to fold into one another. She could feel everything, yet nothing at all. Yet, there was an unbearable feeling of dread that still lingered. From the horrific hallucinations to witnessing a blood-soaked Jennifer in front of her, Lydia was beginning to think that she was going mad.

There had to be a logical explanation for all of this. There just had to be.

Her eyes slammed shut, praying that she would awaken from this horrible nightmare. She wanted to forget, but fate would not let her. Nothing would give her peace now.

"My mom bought these for us," a young Lydia told Jennifer. She revealed two heart-shaped necklaces with the word 'BFF' engraved into both of them. "They're friendship necklaces."

Lydia handed one to her friend. The little girl examined it in her hands, delicately caressing the metal. "BFF? What does that mean?"

"It means "Best Friends Forever", and that's what you are, Jen."  She explained, undoing the clasp on her own necklace.

She glimpsed at her with a stunned expression. "I'm your best friend?"

"Of course, Jennifer." She carefully put the chain around her neck, joining one end with the other. "Nothing's going to separate us."

Jennifer lightly smiled, stricken by Lydia's kindness. They had been friends for quite some time now, but she did not expect to be her "best" friend. She definitely wanted it to remain that way. "Thank you, Di."

Lydia's eyes burst open, her mind quickly returning to reality. Nevertheless, memories of her friendship with Jennifer continued to cloud her mind. She was so sweet and innocent back then. But that thing she almost collided with on the road was not her best friend; that was something else.

She sat up, rubbing the mascara away from her eyes with her hands. Groggily, Lydia climbed the stairs and approached her bedroom. She tried to convince herself that everything that happened was just a hallucination. A cruel, waking nightmare that just couldn't be real.
