Lin had the expression of a future police chief on her face at the moment after she asked the question. It was one she often wore, and when she did, not many people would mess around with her.
"They obviously have to have some sort of motive to attack like that," she began, turning to face her sister, mom, and everyone else. "Have you made any enemies lately?"
Aang, Sokka, Suki, Mai and Zuko shook their heads. Katara still looked shaken, her face bearing an ashamed and frightened look, most likely for resorting to bloodbending, but shook her head as well. Only Toph remained impartial, shrugging.
"What do you mean by that shrug, Mom?" Lin immediately asked, raising her eyebrows.
"Eh, you make some enemies in the police force every time you lock someone up and they don't think they're guilty," she explained. "What can I say? It's my job."
"Okay... did you lock up any bloodbenders, then?" she continued sharply.
"No, not that I know of."
Lin crossed her arms and thought fo a second, tapping her foot. "Are they members of the Triple Threat Triad?"
"Probably not," Suki answered. "The Triple Threat Triad would probably barge in and wouldn't hesitate to use their bending. They're ruffians compared to the way those four were fighting."
"Triple Threat Triad," Sokka muttered. "That's a mouthful. Hey, I know, we should call them the Triple T's!"
Lin glared at him, then glanced around at all the adults in the room, taking one last shot. "Are they in any way related to the 'Triple Threat Triad' case that you guys have all been so occupied with?"
Aang shook his head, but there was a two second hesitation. She took note of it mentally for later.
"No, that's with the Triple Threat Triad," he said.
"Triple T's," Sokka corrected.
"Sure, Triple T's," Aang agreed. "But, anyway, that case isn't related to them."
"Are you sure?" Lin asked, locking her green eyes onto his grey ones. Out of all of them, Aang was the worst liar. Well, Tenzin was worse, but of the grown-ups, the Avatar failed under pressure or lying.
As soon as he blinked, breaking the stare, Katara took over for her husband. "Lin, sweetie--"
Lin pressed her lips together. She hated Aunt Katara's "sweeties". Always about her clothes or they way she acted. "Don't call me that."
"Fine, Lin," she corrected, smiling gently, "while I appreciate how interested you are in this, I think it would be better to let the adults--"
"Team Avatar!" Sokka shrieked.
Katara rolled her eyes. "Yes, Team Avatar. Thank you, Sokka," she said sarcastically. "Anyhow"--she turned her attention back to the metalbender--"you guys are just children, and the four attacker shouldn't be your concern. So why don't you all go outside?"
Lin huffed. "I'm thirteen, Aunt Katara--a teenager, not a child. And I'll be fourteen in three weeks."
"I'm not a kid, I'm nineteen," Bumi said, "does that mean I can join the adults?"
"You're not an adult until you're twenty-one, technically," Aang corrected his son. "So, no."
"Dad?" Izumi asked somewhat hopefully.
Zuko and Mai shook their heads firmly. "Like Katara said, this isn't of your concern."
"Take Su and go outside," Toph said pointedly to Lin and the rest of the "kids".
