Cali Serenity
"Cali I need to have a talk with you"I looked up from my patient's chart to see Dr.Doughty poking her head into the room where I just finished taking my patient's vitals.
"Y-Yes ma'am" I nervously spoke.
I slid the pages inside of the file folder and bit down nervously on my bottom lip as I exited the room, standing face-to-face with Dr.Doughty.
Her normally kinky-curly hair was styled into a curly bun with a diamond-studded hairband.
"How are you?"
"I'm fine, you?"
"I'm well Cali, thank you for asking me" she stared at me.
I looked around before looking back at her as she cracked a smile. No funny shit, sis is being kind of weird but she's the one who will determine if I pass my clinical so ima keep my mouth shut and facial expressions in check.
"I see your stomach bug has passed. No sickness lately, right?"
"Umm the chamomile and ginger tea my boyfriend brews for me every morning helped a lot but out of habit I just drink it every morning"
"Cali, follow me please" My eyes followed her as she began walking down the hall until we reached her office that was at the end of the west wing of the department.
I looked around at the different pictures of her family on her desk and her Delta Sigma Theta memorabilia hung from the board of her and her line sisters.
She motioned for me to sit down and I did so quickly.
"I asked you to come to my office because I wanted to speak with you privately about something"
"Okay" I replied nervously.
"You have been here for a few months and I know that you have been completing your clinical trials in different departments such as Critical Care, some geriatrics but I know that you are winding down towards the end of your program. How do you feel?"
I thought for a second as I looked down at my lap and really wanted to be transparent but professional about my answer.
It's always hard to know what Dr.D is thinking and I damn sure don't want to offend.
"Well, all honesty it has been bittersweet and I say that from a realistic standpoint. When I first got here I was questioning if this was the field for me because of the rough days I'd experience from patients, families, and sometimes staff. But as I reflect, this is what I enjoy doing; helping people, saving lives, and nurturing people. That's honestly how I feel. Clinicals made me develop tough skin and working in this field it's a necessity."
Dr. Doughty nodded her head as she sat up straight in her swivel chair with a smile on her face. I saw her teeth, let alone a damn smile so I don't know if It was a good or bad thing.
