"What do you mean you didn't do anything? Sure, it's not a big change but you can still see it…"
Sophie and Emma were on their way to class. Sophie was a bit annoyed. Of course she knew that her friend hated to be put in the spotlight but she was just talking about her hair.
"See what, Soph?"
They arrived and sat down together.
"The shift in color. Some strands are more red, others more blue."
Emma still didn't understand what her friend was talking about. She didn't do anything with her hair. "No, not more blue...just...icier? Anyway. Where have you been? You didn't answer your phone, you didn't even read the texts. It was, like, you were in another universe. And then, boom, out of nowhere you're back in action."
Her friend was excitedly gripping her shoulders. Trying to get out of her grip, Emma got out her books for the next lesson. "I was... busy… class starts any minute. Where's Mr Harrington?"
Until lunch Sophie didn't bring it up again. She was busy telling Emma all about the latest gossip. Apparently Sam, the new guy, had a crush on someone. Some of the girls had dragged him into a game of truth or dare, but before they could get a name from him he had run away, quite literally.
She was talking about more but Emma tuned her out. "I gotta go." She got up too fast for Sophie to do anything about it.
On her way to the bathrooms some younger students gave her weird looks. She was walking away from the cafeteria. Away from the crowd. Right before she walked around the last corner someone bumped into her, sending the teen flying to the ground. Just before she hit the ground a hand was wrapped around her wrist.
"You have to look where you're going. You okay?"
Emma slowly felt the panic she had held at bay the whole day rising. She didn't respond nor even look at the boy.
"You hear me?" He didn't know the girl but the empty look in her eyes sent goosebumps down his arm that was still holding her. As an attempt to pull the girl back into reality he gently tightened his grip for a moment.
After she still didn't show a reaction he tried again. Although it did work this time he quickly pulled back his hand as he felt the girl's skin heart up. Frantically she looked around.
After her eyes saw the still out reaching hand in front of her, she flinched, taking a quick step back before running past the boy it belonged to. Confused he turned around but the girl had already slipped into the bathroom.
Feeling her hands begin to shake she closed the stall door. Breathing was getting difficult and her vision was starting to get blurry. Her legs gave out as she slowly slid down the door. In an attempt to stop her trembling hands she pulled her knees close to her chest as images from strangers hitting her flashed through her mind.
Just like her mind couldn't seem to focus on just one of the many memories, her eyes snapped from one point to another. In the back of her head she noticed some girls talking right in front of the door she was leaning against. Their voices seemed far away though. As their voices faded completely the ones inside her own mind spoke up.
This is why no one believed in you.
You have to take in one hit and then sit somewhere on the floor crying about it.
They pity you. You don't even deserve to be so close to them, to be called a hero like them.
You only slow them down. You mean nothing to them.
They lived completely fine without. Why did you even go back?
You're only a burden, taking up a place you're not even worthy of. They will never accept you. They don't even care. They're better off without you.
