Arabelle

I hastily brush my teeth, all the while trying to brush my dry and messy red hair with my fingers. To put it simple, I look like crap and I'm also very late for work.

“Gosh why didn't you wake me?” I glare at Sarah who's sprawled comfortably on her single bed which is opposite mine. She's busy texting Richard, her hot boyfriend who she seems to always fight with. That cannot be healthy.

I go to my study desk which is very unorganised with criminal case files and papers. I pack all the subsidiary files for Linear Impact Co, that I stayed up entering all night.

“I don't get why you pin everything on me. You're a law student. Efficient time management is an important part of your dream job,” she says, and I roll my eyes at her exaggeration.

“Ugh. I don't get why I chose to be dorm-mates with you. You're terrible and I hate you,” I say then stick my tongue out at her and she snorts.

“Ha. Ha. You wish you could hate me but you can't. I am the ying to your yang and you love me for it. Cousin,” she says not even glancing my way.

I like to define Sarah as the royal queen. She's pretty, elegant, and most importantly, a drama queen. She can act and can be very persuasive and manipulative. Believe me, you do not want to go up against her.

She is just a gem that always shines brights and yes I really adore her. She's the only good looking person that I've met who actually has a bit of good in her.

“I have to go, I'll see you later!” I say and she hums.

“Bring me those famous takoyaki's from your company's restaurant. Love you!” she yells after me.

Frank is livid when I arrive at my desk. He shoots a million questions my way as to why I am half an hour late when it's my duty? I tell him  that I had to stop by the university first to drop off an assignment that was due, which is not completely a lie. I actually did that.. Yesterday.

“Are you trying to cost me my job woman?” he scowls at me and I give him my best 'I'm sorry' face.

I learnt it from Sarah. “Furrow your eyebrows and do the puppy dog eyes, then do a little pout. It works magic.”

“I am so sorry Frank. I will do my best to not disappoint you again, cross my heart,” I say and he  wrinkles his nose in a scowl.

“Mr Smith expects me in his office on time. If you're late, then I'm late. I only fill in for you here. You know I'm actually a hired personal assistant and I need to do that job effectively,” he says and I  sigh and nod a million times.

“I know and I'm really sorry.”

Frank shakes his head in disappointment as he walks towards the elevator to go to his official post as the personal assistant.

I let out a breath of relief when he disappears. That was surprisingly a good reaction from him compared to last time. He really caused a scene that time. I was so embarrassed.

The rest of the morning goes by rather smoothly. I watch Andrew training in the gym, from a distance. How can a guy have such nice skin? And look do good without any make up on?

I didn't expect any less in his fight last week. Andrew is very determined guy and I can tell that he's stubborn. If he sets his mind onto something he'll carry on with it until it's finished. He gives me good vibes that I don't really get from other people in this company like Mr Smith. Mr Smith is very friendly and nice but I feel like he's a little too  nice.

Frank brings me some a pile of papers.

“Here's your chance to make it up to me girly.” he says in a very happy tone and my eyes widen at the amount of papers there is.

“I won't like the sound of this,” I say more to myself and he snorts.

“Help me record all these transactions into the company ledger. These records are from the last six months. It has to be done in about three weeks more or less. I have the other half, and I just can't manage it all on my own,” he says and I sigh. I groan and lay my head on the table in defeat.

I stand up straight and sigh.

“Ugh. Fineeee...” I say with mock annoyance and he does a little clap and leaves. I grab the large stack of papers and find a box to put them in. These will be really hard to take back to the dorm.

I take out my laptop and open Microsoft Excel. I take the first five pages on the pile. I start entering all the numbers and amounts into the grids. I do everything carefully, not wanting to make a mistake. That's when I notice it. There are numerous  mistakes on here.

I take a look at the other three bank statements.

“Huhhh?” I say aloud and Trevor who's passing by eyes me weird and I give an awkward smile and pretend I'm just texting on my phone.

When he's out of sight I keep looking through more and more. All the records on the pile have the same algorithm or mistake. I get a sinking feeling in my stomach but I stay hopeful. There has to be a logical explanation.

Linear Impact Co. Main Acc

INCOMING CAPITAL - MAY  & June

FoxLog Bank  $2 000 000 000 (Two Billion USD)
SummitRising Bank South Africa R50 000 000 000
(Fifty Billion ZAR)
Neo Canada Int. Bank  $100 000 000  (Hundred Million USD)
Verizonia Brazilian Bank  $750 000 (Seven Hundred and Fifty thousand USD)
LA General Direct Bank  $87 000 000 (Eighty Seven Million USD

World Boxing Fund $50 000 000 (Fifty Million USD)

The last bank is the one that really catches my attention. My legs weaken and I fall onto my chair in shock. I can't believe it. You don't have to be a law student to know what this is because it's clear as day.

Our company gets eighty  percent of its income from The World Boxing Fund and the remaining percentages from investors and small in-business like its restaurants and gyms.... or so we were led to believe.

However, these records say a whole different statement. Five different banks are bringing in way more money than the World Boxing Fund.

That means that The World Boxing Fund is a front the company uses to hide its real sources of income.

I don't even think I want to know where all this money is coming from and what's making it. Has Frank ever noticed what he's been recording?

Impact Linear Co. is running a money laundering scheme.
