The door opened, revealing Violet. Her eyes widened when she saw us.
"Sunny, Beatrice? What are you doing here?" she asked.
"Quick introductions," said Sunny. "This is Noah and Charlotte. Guys, this is Violet. Let's go inside." We entered the house one by one.
Klaus was reading on the sofa. "What are you doing here?" he asked the same question.
"We've got something to tell you," Flynn explained. He sat down on the sofa and everyone followed him.
"We have some news too," said Klaus.
"You go first," I said, making myself comfortable.
"Well," said Violet, "Klaus and I decided to drop in at Headquarters yesterday and we heard that Esme Squalor escaped from jail a few days ago."
"Yeah," said Evan. "We heard about it."
"And now us Volunteers are thinking that Esme might create chaos at VFD, recruiting people from the organization," Klaus continued. "So we don't know who to trust nowadays."
"You're right," said Sunny. She explained how she, Charlotte, Noah and I heard people talking about it. "And Noah and I heard something about using you two and Sunny for something," said Charlotte. "We were about to hear more, but the people almost spotted us and we had to go."
"So that means one of you are in serious danger," said Klaus, pushing up his glasses. "This is bad. Do the other Volunteers know about this?"
"The people at Prufrock do," said Noah.
"Let's go," said Violet all of a sudden.
"Wha- go where?" I asked, upset. I was so dam comfy in the sofa.
"To alert the VFD members," said Violet, tying up her hair to think. She had had this habit since she was little. "We've got no time to waste. I say we go to Headquarters first, then Prufrock."
"Prufrock?" questioned Sunny.
"Yeah," Violet said. "If Klaus, Sunny and I are supposedly in some kind of danger, along with the VFD trainee, we should do something about it. Klaus, what do you think?"
"I agree," Klaus agreed.
"Come on," Violet and Klaus put on their coats and we followed them out.
"Um, guys?" Sunny said. "We, um, kinda sorta maybe stole a car and used it to get here. Could we use that again so we could kindly drop it off where it was?"
"I understand that this was an emergency," said Klaus, "but that's not an excuse to steal cars. It was very inconsiderate of you. Will you do that again, Sunny?"
"No," Sunny muttered, staring at her feet.
"Good," said Klaus. "And you five," he pointed at the rest of us, "Will you let her do anything like this again?"
"No," we all said.
"Excellent," said Klaus. "Let's go in that car of yours, Sunny. And Violet has to drive."
Sunny folded her arms and scowled.
Twenty minutes later, we arrived at Headquarters. Us kids were in charge of taking care of the car while Violet and Klaus went out to warn the Volunteers.
"Klaus can be pretty strict sometimes," Flynn observed. "I never knew that."
"Before Beatrice was there, he was super cool with whatever I did," said Sunny. "I guess now he realizes that he has to take charge and be the responsible one, with Violet."
I snorted. "Responsible."
Eventually, we broke out into conversation. Sunny and Evan, Charlotte and Noah, Flynn and I.
"So how's it like, living with Fiona and Fernald?" I asked him. Flynn rolled his eyes. "Arguments and disagreements," he replied. "Debates and disputes. You'd think those two love each other too much to argue, but you're wrong."
"Same with me," I said. "Violet and Klaus always argue about everything, from what we should have for lunch to who'd do the dishes to who'd wake me up. But they love each other nonetheless, of course."
Flynn nodded. "Why would they argue about who would wake you up?" he asked. I laughed. "You don't know the half of it," I said. "I'm glad that I don't have to wake up to the sound of Klaus reading Understanding Criminal Law again. Those books weigh a ton."
Flynn laughed, too.
We sat in awkward silence for a while.
"Look at Evan and Sunny," said Flynn. "They've bonded so much."
"Like best friends," I agreed. Then I said what had been on my mind ever since the first day of school. "Sometimes I feel left out. I mean, Sunny and I've been through everything together, and I guess I'm not used to sharing her."
"Seven year olds," smirked Flynn.
I hit him on the shoulder.
"Hey!" he protested.
"But whenever you feel like that, remember that she's just making friends," he reasoned. "You've also got me, and Tabitha and her gang." He said the last word a little bitterly.
"What's so bad in her?" I asked. "First Sunny has a grudge against her, and now you."
"They're pretty mean to me," Flynn admitted. "They call me a nerd and knock my books to the ground. Then they laugh."
"What?" I said, horrified. "That's unacceptable! That's bad! That's-" I looked at Flynn for more words. "Preposterous and rude?" He suggested. "Yeah, preprostus and rude!"
"Preposterous," he pronounced.
"Yeah, I said preprostus," I insisted. "Anyway, I'm gonna have to talk to Tabitha. She has no right to bully my best friend!"
Flynn smiled. "Thanks for calling me your best friend."
"Of course you are, Flynn," I said. "Along with my siblings, Evan, and that nice girl I met at the supermarket a year ago."
"What's her name?"
"I don't know, she never told me," I said.
