Chapter 35

"Salazzle, I choose-huh?!"
"Toxel," Toxie giggled in delight, bursting out of the luxury ball before I could stop her. "Toxie, get back here now!"

"Aww, so cute!" Marnie cooed. Piers just smirked and laughed.
"You do know Toxel ain't as powerful as Toxtricity, right? That little one'll get blasted away by us!"
"Toxie, what are you doing?!" I hissed, lowering my voice. "Get back here right now!"
"Tox, toxel," she replied, facing her opponent without question.
"Huh." I murmured, sizing the two up. "I think I get it. You want to battle Toxtricity to prove how strong you are, right?"

"Toxel," she laughed happily.
"Well, okay. I can live with that," I smiled, putting her luxury ball away.
"Battle resume!"
"Quick, Toxie, use Power-Up Punch!"

Leaping towards Toxtricity with a shriek, fist glowing with power, she connected with his face with a grunt and shout. "Toxtricity, counter with Overdrive!" Toxtricity went wild, strumming its strings and blasting Toxie away with a shockwave of electricity. Overdrive. An Electric-type move exclusive to Toxtricity. It hits all opponents with an electric wave made of sound.

"Bet you didn't see that comin','' Piers jeered, and Toxtricity pounded out another solo. Toxie was sitting on her behind, and starting to blubber. I really didn't want a baby Pokemon's temper tantrum on my hands, so I tried to shut him up the only way I knew how. "So, Piers, I've gotta ask you one thing," I asked, to stop him from laughing.

"An' what'd that be?" he smirked.
"Why no Dynamax? I mean, I get you don't do it here because of no power spot, but why don't you have a Dynamax Band for emergencies?"
"Uh, I just don't use it," he mumbled.

"It's alright, I get it," I fake sympathized, mocking him in the same way. "Dynamaxing is scary. Nobody likes being that close to all that power."
"I'm not scared of 'em," he growled, face flushing redder. "I just don't like it."

"Aww! Is the widdle ex-Gym Weader afwaid of the big Dynamax Pokemon?" I stuck my lip out in a pout. Marnie and some other Team Yell members were snickering. Even his Toxtricity was confused whether to laugh or to back him up. Piers' face went from deep crimson to purple, though from rage or embarrassment I couldn't tell. The line between the two emotions was very blurry with him.

"Alright, Toxie, Acid, let's go!" I shouted to continue the battle.
"Counter with Overdrive!"
"Jump over the shockwaves and get in close!" Toxie bounded over the waves of electricity and launched a smelly projectile of acid that distracted Toxtricity, but didn't do much damage.

We need to find a way around Overdrive that won't cause Toxie damage, I thought, watching Toxie play a dangerous game of jump rope with Toxtricity's attacks. But none of her attacks are super effective against Toxtricity...I need a solution, and fast!

"Tox," Toxie shrieked, flying back and landing on her back. She'd been hit by one of the waves of energy, and had taken quite a bit of damage. "Toxie! Are you okay?!" I knelt to check on her. "Tox," she whimpered, her body covered in bruises and little scratches. "Okay. Get in close again and use Flail!"
"Use Overdrive!"

We can't keep going with this pattern, I growled, watching her dodge attacks from Overdrive yet again. We're fighting a losing battle. "Now! Use Flail!" Toxie flailed around, kicking and punching at Toxtricity, who stumbled back and growled. "Use Nuzzle!!"

Toxie jumped up to Toxtricity, and rubbed her face against his, causing sparks and sending him stumbling back. "Great! Now use Nuzzle, repeatedly!"
"Toxtricity, get away!" Toxie leapt towards Toxtricity, leading him in a weird game of chase around the arena. "Don't let him escape!"

"Toooxxxx!!!" She howled, lighting up with electricity and sending a volt towards Toxtricity, connecting with his shoulder and enveloping him in golden energy. "That was Spark," I gasped, watching Toxie land. "You learned a new move! Awesome!"

"TOOOXXXXX!!!!" She shrieked, crackling with electricity that for some reason was sparking blue. "Is that...?" I asked, eyes widened in recognition. Toxie howled, suddenly and completely encased in shiny blue energy. "She's evolving!"
