I continue to stare at the enormous creature in front of me as Elain paces back and forth a bit. I turn away from the cause of Elain's stress and face the pacing Siren, "I don't understand why you're so worried. I mean this is a good thing. Right? We found the legendary creature and now we just need to go find the trident. Bam, problem solved."

Elian stops his stress swimming to look at me with a crinkled forehead, "Marina, I think you are failing to see an important situation."

I stare at him with my hands on my hips, "Which is?"

"You don't know how to fight with a trident, Marina. Do you?"

I freeze for a second and then raise a brow, "So? I'll find the trident, grab it, and hand it over to you. Bam, another problem solved." I hear a low rumble in the water and turn to see the Kitsuana shaking its large head in disagreement, its whiskers flowing left and right like cerulean eels.

"Only the chosen warrior may wield the Trident. No one else. No one less. No one more. Only you."

I stare into his eyes and almost laugh, "Yeah, well, too bad so sad because I can't fight with a trident. I'll end up accidentally empaling myself." I turn back to Elian as I move a hand through my slightly tangled hair, "Let's go find the trident."

Elian sighs as he rubs his brows in frustration, "Marina, the Trident will only work for the Warrior. No one else."

I open my mouth to protest when the overgrown sea lizard interrupts me, "The young prince is correct. The Trident will not allow anyone but the warrior to wield it. It is the rules."

I almost growl as I turn to the Kitsuana, "What rules? I would love to read them because I don't know why the hell I was chosen. I can barely defend myself. I only know how to survive, not to thrive. Why me!" Fuck, I'm scared. I'm really fucking scared.

I don't realize I'm breaking down until Elian swims up to me and pulls me into his embrace, "Come here. I got you. You're okay. You'll be okay." I cry silently.

First, I got pushed into a whole new world underwater. Next, I find out my mother wasn't human and lose my father as a result of the truth. Now, I find out I'm some chosen warrior that has to fight with a fucking trident?

I hear a saddened rumble from the Kitsuana, "There is no need for fear or tears, as the chosen one, you will feel the trident and know what to do. It is in your blood. It is why you were chosen, young princess."

Great, now I'm a freaking princess.

Elian pulls away from me but keeps me at arm's reach. He stares into my eyes deeply as he moves a wandering strand from my hair away from my face, "You will be alright. Once we get the Trident, we will train. I will train you. You will know how to naturally wield the Trident when you get it but you'll still need the practice to gain familiarity. Now," he sighs and stroked my shoulder lightly, "we continue on a worry about more later. But you will be okay. Understand?"
