John
"Arrested?"
"Yeah it's a long story," Christian replied, weaving the both of us away from another group of people that looked like they were pining for Christian's attention. Somehow the reception had gotten rowdy, but I would assume it was due to the fact that everyone on Christian's side of the family was a drinker. Heavy drinkers to be precise.
Surprisingly, Christian seemed pretty sober tonight. I'd later find out that him and Alex were actually completely sober, whereas Joan and Brad were clearly helping themselves to the open bar.
"That's a story I'd like to hear," I spoke honestly. Derek being arrested peaked every interest I had in that odd man.
"I'm sure you'll hear all about it in a few. Alex and I are going to go bail him out right now, and we should be back soon." Christian replied. He was slipping off a suit coat that someone had already spilled a drink on, before he set it behind one of the unused dj booths. Luckily we were the farthest from the one in use, which was blaring some wedding classics out into the reception space of The Gardens.
"Don't be ridiculous," I quipped back almost immediately. "You can't leave your own wedding Christian."
He slowly straightened out his tie as he started to give my words some thought. "I mean, I guess you're right. While me and my very sober... well husband now, wouldn't mind taking a break from these drunk guests, I guess they're our drunk guests to deal with. I could probably send someone from the company?"
"Or I can go," I offered, not even processing the words before they left my mouth. The look Christian gave me was almost pure confusion, mixed with just a dash of shock. "I mean- I just got here so I haven't started drinking yet, and I'm sure Derek would want to see a familiar face instead of some random employee." I tried to explain my now worked out reasoning.
"I... guess? I don't know, I feel like you probably have more important things to do, right? I mean, you always do- you mentioned your schedule was pretty intense today, and you could only stop by for a bit. I wouldn't want you to spend your free time down at the precinct." Christian straightened his tie again. "Plus, push comes to shove, Derek could always spend a night there and we'll bail him out in the morning."
Christian was being pretty nonchalant with the whole situation, which further solidified my thoughts that Derek must've gotten arrested for some pretty stupid shit.
I thought back to the first time I ran into that bundle of nerves in Hawaii. It was quite the coincidence that he had made it out for the hotdog eating competition on the same weekend I gifted Christian, Alex, Joan, and Brad a little couples vacation.
I could still recall the brief conversation we had the morning of. He was gearing up to take home first, which was pretty exhilarating to hear about.
I didn't remember much of the people I met with so briefly, but hell would freeze over before I could forget Derek.. willingly or not.
