Weeks had passed since the death of her parents, and all Sybil could do was keep running. She knew that the men were still looking for her, and she didn't want to find out what would happen when they found her. She stopped sleeping, afraid to see the image of her dead parents in her head. She felt the guilt of not being there, and the sadness she felt for losing her family put her into a depressed state.
She was digging through the trash behind a restaurant for some food. Her stomach was smaller than usual. She was used to not eating, but it had been weeks since she had a decent meal. She was nothing more than skin and bone. She found a piece of cake and quickly scarfed it down along with a half-empty water bottle. She quickly chugged the water, relieving her thirst. Most of the food wasn't in good enough shape to eat, so she left it. She quickly jumped out of the trash when she heard the employee coming out.
"Get out of here, you filthy rat!" He yelled when he saw her; she quickly ran away. She had on the same blue dress she was wearing when she ran away, but now it was dirty and torn. Her hair was a mess, and she lost her shoes. She took an empty cup she found on the floor and sat at the street corner like she saw many others do. Every time someone walked by, she held up the cup, hoping for some money to buy some food. She was given disgusted stares, and some gave her loose change. She counted it all and saw she had enough to buy a snack to eat. When she walked into the store, the woman made a disgusted face.
"Can I have some food? I have money." She showed the woman her money just to make sure she didn't think she was lying.
"You smell disgusting. Please leave; you're upsetting the other customers." She said.
"But I-I have money." She said.
"Read the sign, sweetheart. We don't serve the homeless. Now get out of here before you drive the other customers away with your stench." Sybil turned around and walked out. Disappointed, she got up and walked to the park. On her way there, she saw a family dropping off some clothes in a donation bin. The little girl looked about her height; the clothes they were dropping off looked so nice and almost brand new. Sybil looked down at her old dirty dress. She waited for them to leave before opening the bin and looking at the clothes.
She found a beautiful floral dress and some shoes to go with it. She quickly changed into the clothes. She headed down to the park to play with the ducks. She chased the ducks around and ran when they came after her, laughing. She made little duck noises and laughed when the ducks would quack back. A couple of kids saw her and started laughing at her.
"Look, guys, it's the duck girl again. Look how stupid she looks?" They all laughed. Sybil stopped what she was doing.
"W-why are you so mean to me?" She asked them.
"Ewww, you smell bad. Do you ever take showers?" The boy said; again, the kids laughed.
"Stop it! It's not funny. Leave me alone!" She yelled at them, and they just kept laughing.
"Duck girl, smelly girl, Duck girl smelly girl!" They chanted, laughing.
"I said stop it!" She punched the little boy in the face and pushed down the girls; they screamed. One of the boys came behind her and grabbed her arms, pulling them behind her back. The little boy got up and hit her back, cutting her lip open. The boy behind her pushed her down, and they all started to kick her. She screamed for help crying. The parents of the group saw what was happening and quickly rushed over.
"What is going on over here!" One of them yelled. The kids stopped. Sybil was glad someone came to her aid.
"She hit us, mom. We just wanted to play with her, and she got mad. She pushed Katie and me down and punched Austin in the face. We were just teaching her a lesson." one of the little girls said. Sybil hoped they didn't believe the lies.
