"You should go out there," Margot said to him as he watched Sybil and Myah interact with each other.
"I think I should give her space. Plus it would be nice for her and Myah to get along." He replied to her.
"Do you trust her?"
"She's my mate Margot, I think I'm supposed to trust her. Besides, I don't think she has any intention of hurting anyone here. She knows what the Order would do to her if she did."
"I guess, but a girl like her has a dark history and the last thing we need is it catching up with her and biting us in the a**." Margot said.
"You're doing it again," August replied.
"Doing what?"
"Getting into my head and making me doubt if a relationship will work out. I know you do it so I don't get hurt, but I'm a big boy Margot." He said.
"Fine, I'll stop, but it doesn't mean I trust her." August pulled her into a hug. Sybil watched the two of them, a strange feeling overwhelming her. She pushed the feeling away and stopped watching them.
August walked outside to call Myah inside for bed. The little girl was reluctant but went in anyway.
"Can we talk, or are you going to keep pretending you don't feel the connection?" August asked her.
"Why? Why of all the wolves and people in this world I'm your mate? I'm human, I'm not even from your world, but I'm your mate. I don't want it." She said.
"Look, I don't understand it either, but I have been waiting for years for my mate to show up, and look now you're here. I've always felt a void in my heart, but now that you're here it has disappeared." He moved closer to her, but she moved back.
"Stop, okay. Just stay over there. I'm going to let you into something, I am not a people person. I don't do relationships or friendships. The universe clearly f*cked you over by making me your mate." She replied. He ignored her words and moved closer, pinning her between him and the tree. He took her hand and placed it over his heart.
"You feel that? Do you feel the way my heart is beating just being close to you? Only one other person has ever made me feel this way. I get it your trained to not get close to others for your protection, but I won't hurt you, Sybil. I won't." Before she could say anything else, he smashed his lips against her and pulled her closer. She was caught off guard by the kiss, but she kissed him back. Feeling the strong sparks again, she pushed him back.
"I said I didn't want this. You don't love me August, your nature tells you that you do, but you don't. You don't know me or my past, if you did you couldn't love me. So just stop. Stop trying to get me to love you because I won't." She said. She disappeared into the woods leaving him there to think over her words.
After a few hours, Sybil returned back home. August was sitting on the back porch waiting for her. She sat next to him in silence. She understood what mates were, she knew her words had hurt him deeply, but she was human. They felt the mate bond in different ways. She wasn't obligated by natural instincts to love him the way he was.
"I'm not going to force you to love me, Sybil. When you are ready, we can try," he said, breaking the silence. "Come on, it's cold out here and you should get some rest. I'm sure a certain somebody is gonna bother you in the morning."
"Yeah, that daughter of yours sure asks a lot of questions. She reminded me of myself when I was younger. So full of life with a need to learn about everything." Sybil smiled thinking of a happier time when she was younger, before the abuse. "Don't let that spark burn out, it turns you into someone like me."
"Do you really see yourself as a shell of a woman? Someone who can't be fixed?" August asked her.
"You can try to fix me, but there are millions of pieces and you'll get cut along the way, so it's not worth it." She said. "Goodnight August." She got up and walked into the house.
August couldn't sleep, so he went for a run changing into his wolf form. He knew that when it came to people like Sybil, who have been hurt so deeply in their life, they needed time before they could open up and form relationships with others. It would take time, but he was willing to give it to her; he didn't mind waiting for her.
"Daddy. Daddy wake up. Come one wake up." Myah said, waking him up, he kept his eyes closed."If you don't wake up I'm gonna jump on you." She counted down then jumped onto him. He opened his eyes and started to tickle her. Her laughs filled the room.
"I'm awake now. Are you happy you little monster?"He laughed.
"Grandma says to come down for breakfast or she'll come up here and drag you out of bed," Myah said.
"Did she now, okay give me five minutes. Go tell grandma to warm up my plate."She nodded her head and ran out of the room. August walked into the kitchen which was filled with laughter. He grabbed his plate and sat in his chair next to Sybil.
"Wait, you guys trained with the Triad?" Margot asked.
"It's basically a way for them to beat us, and teach us to be better fighters," Sybil answered
"So you guys lost miserably didn't you?"
"Nobody wins against the Triad. They are an unstoppable force. Just trying to take one of them down was hard, when all three work together it's nearly impossible. But I did manage to injure the Alpha King." Sybil said.
"Wait, you actually got a hit onto him?" August asked.
"I was the only one who did. Which is how I got this." She pulled down the shoulder of her shirt and showed the claw marks, along with the Alpha Kings Crest below it. " He was angry, which is why I have the claw marks, but impressed I was actually able to get him hence the crest."
"That's bada**," Myah said. Everyone looked at the little girl.
"Myah!" Bria said. Everyone else just laughed. "How do you know that word?"
"The people in the pack say it a lot. It means very cool right?" She asked.
"How about you don't repeat after those pack members who say bad words? No more bad words, understand young lady?" August said.
"Yes, daddy. Sybil, can we go outside now? I want to learn how to throw knives." She stood next to Sybil pulling onto her hand. She got up and joined the girl.
"So, did the two of you clear the air? She said some interesting things last night." Margot said.
"Were you eavesdropping on our conversation?" August asked her.
"No, I just happened to be walking into the kitchen for a midnight snack when I overheard the conversation. I may or may not have stayed and listened a little." August chuckled at her words.
"Of course you were. She's only here for a short time until they call her back. Her job is everything to her. I can tell that she doesn't know how to be anything other than a huntress. It has been her way of survival and life for years now. Even if she did stay here for longer, eventually she would get bored and leave." He admitted. He knew there was nothing holding Sybil to him.
"Well, the good thing is your daughter likes her. I don't think I've seen Myah interact with anyone other than you, me, and your parents the way she has with Sybil. I mean it was like an instant connection. Besides, Sybil seems really good with her. She's the perfect fit for you. I just don't think she's ready to accept that yet. Now come on, you have pack members to train. They'll be fine." She dragged him away.
