Hailey

It had been two weeks since I was released from the hospital and a week since we moved into a new house. I wasn't exactly sure why we moved into a new house, other than Olivia saying we couldn't rent out that house anymore. I know there is more to it than that, but I just agreed as there wasn't much I could do about it.

I had gone jogging once Olivia got home from work, despite what had happened as that was my outlet and I wasn't going to have that taken from me. On my way back to our house I saw Olivia arguing with a guy outside the house.

"Hey!" I yelled, trying to take the obviously unwanted attention away from my best friend.

The guy snapped his head towards me and just stared as I made my way over. I tried to read the look on his face to try to see what his problem was, but he turned as soon as I got close enough to do so.

"Is there a problem here?" I asked while I stepped closer to Olivia as if I could offer some sort of protection. In all honesty, she would be the one to protect me.

"No, no problem Hale," she sighed, "This is just my annoying cousin, Chase Willix. Hailey meet Chase, Chase meet Hailey Winchester. My best friend."

I wasn't aware of why she had put extra emphasis on best friend, but I shook it off. I held out my hand for him to take, but Olivia gave him a look so he didn't. Again, I didn't question it, I'm sure there are plenty of reasons she wants this guy to stay away from me. They started talking about a relative's birthday party and I zoned out taking in his features.

He had a breathtaking smile and brown hair. His eyes were a dark green and I thought if I kept looking that I would get lost. My eyes travelled on their own accord down his muscular body.

Man, this family stays fit.

I lost my train of thought when a throat cleared and someone said my name.

"Huh?" I said finally tuning back in.

Chase's amazing smile had turned into a smug smirk which told me he had caught my staring. I could feel a light blush coming on as I quickly excused myself to go check on Brayden.

"Hi baby boy," I quietly said picking up the smiling child.

He was such a good baby. He rarely ever cried and he was always happy. Even now when he was teething. He had gotten so big since I had met them. I assumed he developed faster than most babies for some reason because the ones I've known aren't at the stages he is at his age. Maybe it was because of Olivia's amazing genes, I wasn't sure, but it was causing me to start to wonder. It was hard to believe he was already six months old and that I'd been in his life for two months now, maybe even a little longer.

He had just started to sit up by himself and roll over onto his stomach. Olivia had been trying her hardest to get him to start saying 'mama'. He was getting closer, but it was hilarious watching her over annunciate every word.

I was so grateful to have them in my life and I don't think either of them would ever know just how much they have given me.

"Sorry about that," Olivia huffed but quickly the frustration was replaced with happiness as she looked at Brayden and smiled.

"Well," she picked up Brayden, "You better start getting ready."

"Wait what?" I jumped up, following after her into Brayden's room.

She rolled her eyes, "You were too busy checking out Chase to notice, but he told us that we were invited to dinner. I said no and he said my parents said we must. He also said I had a lot of explaining to do."

She looked at Brayden and sighed before turning back to me, "I knew it was coming, I just-"

"I know, Liv, I know. I'll go get ready. Let me know if you need help with Bray, okay?" She nodded as I headed upstairs to get ready.

I frowned at the sixth dress I had put on. Olivia said it would be a cookout and we would be outside so I dressed casual but cute–or I was trying at least.

I groaned in frustration, especially since I had no idea why I was trying so hard.

I grabbed the first dress I had put on and pulled it back on. Before I could take it off again Olivia burst through the door. She took a look around my room and gave me a look.

"Really?" she asked before walking over to me.

"The dress is perfect on you," she threw a pair of sandals at me, "wear these," then she pulled me into the bathroom.

"Where's your curling iron?" she asked as she rummaged through my things, even though I didn't have much.

"Girl, all you have is a brush, crappy straightener, and a toothbrush. Come to my bathroom," Olivia said.

I shrugged, I didn't have a reason to look cute before and I wasn't allowed to have very many things.

"I have mascara," I defended as I followed her to the bathroom.

"How do you look good all the time then?" she asked and before I could say I didn't she was pushing me down into the seat in front of her vanity.

I had never seen so many beauty products.

"Goodness, how much stuff do you use?" I asked picking up something that resembled a fan.

She jerked it away from me and said, "Not half of it, but you never know what you may need. Now sit."

She didn't put much on me, but when she was done I felt amazing. I felt confident and it made me very happy. I smiled, the pink lipgloss complimenting my floral dress.

I smiled and turned to her my curls flowing behind me as I said, "Thank you so much."

I hugged her and she smiled, "It's no problem, you're just a beautiful as you were, I just enhanced it. Now let's go get this over with."

I could hear the dread in her voice as she picked up Bray. Once we arrived she introduced me to many of her family members and they were all very nice. They were all also absolutely in love with Bray, it was hard not to be.

"Well, well, well, look what the cat dragged in," a cocky voice sounded behind us, "Oh, and lookie there, she has a little mutt with her too. "

Olivia snapped her head towards them and if I had known better I would've thought she growled.

"Hale, take Bray and go talk to my parents," she said and I quickly nodded as I took Brayden from her.

I tried to walk around the two boys but one stopped me.

"No, let the pretty girl stay," he cooed as he curled one of my curls around his finger, the action making me want to hurl.

"Jaxon I think it would be wise if you left them all alone," A deep voice said, sending chills up my spine.

"Y-Yes Alpha," he said before scurrying off, the other boy left once Chase even showed up behind us.

Wait, Alpha? Was that some kind of nickname?

They must've seen my confusion.

"Big joke in high school," Olivia explained and I nodded, still confused but like always not pressing the matter for the time being. She decided to go ahead and take Brayden with her to talk to her parents. Music began to play as people started eating.

"May I have this dance?" Chase asked out of nowhere as we were awkwardly left alone.

I stared at his outstretched hand, debating on whether I should take it. I smiled and decided to give it a chance. As soon as we made contact my entire body felt warm, I couldn't explain it, but in some way, it made me extremely happy. He spun me around, made me laugh, and for the first time in a long time I enjoyed myself and forgot about everything I was running from.
