I was in the lab with Leo and the rats. Today was the last morning that they could spend with us. Adam was sitting in a chair, Bree, Leo and I were sitting on the cyberdesk while Chase was constantly moving around the room.
"What are you doing?" Leo asked Chase. He had a box under his left arm and had a metal container in the other.
"If Mr. Davenport is gonna ship us off to some remote facility, then the office supplies are coming with us." He said in a serious tone and then slammed the container in the box and then walked away somewhere.
"We just got our first taste of normal life. I was this close to getting a curfew," She used her hand to gesture how close she was, "Which I was totally gonna break!"
"Oooh!" Adam exclaimed, I sensed that he was going to say something stupid, "But maybe whenever we get to where we're going, we'll meet a sassy lab chimp named "Bobo" who will take us on adventures and teach us how to love." He concluded as he snacked on his Chex Mix. That was legitimately the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my entire life. Chase then came over and sat on the cyberdesk next to me.
"Or," Chase started, "Maybe you'll make him angry and he'll maul you and snack on your fingers," I giggled at his remark. He smiled back at me. Adam looked offended. He stood up, pointed at me and Chase and said,
"Hey! I create the monkey fantasies around here!" He told Chase, and then he moved onto me,
"Okay, how do you find Chase so funny? He's short and he has the haircut of a lady golfer." I sent him glares and he shrunk back. Then, Adam, Bree and Leo left the lab. I smirked and turned to Chase,
"Chase," I began, "Don't listen to him. I think your haircut makes you look cute."
Did I seriously just say that to his face?
He blushed hard, and looked down to his lap.
Okay, I guess I did say it.
"Yeah, but you don't understand. He makes fun of me all the time." I felt bad. Adam always did make him feel bad about himself. But I did understand.
"Chase," I began," I do know how you feel."
I probably shouldn't have told him that."How?" He asked.
"Look, I wish I could tell you, but I can't. It's kind of private." I looked down, but he brought my head up to look at his hazel eyes.
"Jazlynn, look, I know we just met, but you know that you can tell me anything, right?"
I nodded.
"I mean, who am I gonna tell? Bobo the Chimp?" I giggle at his question.
"You cannot tell anyone, Chase. Only Leo knows this. Not even Tasha knows. Promise me that you won't tell anyone?"
"I promise."
"Okay...here goes"
"When I was being born, my mother almost died from giving birth to me," I started to explain, "Whenever I was growing up, my dad always told my mom, 'Your daughter was an accident'", I started to tear up, "Whenever I was six, my dad started beating me," I covered my mouth in tears, sniffling, "So, since then, I've been beaten by father every day, and it doesn't help that he drinks all the time." I finished, and by now, my voice was cracking--like my body. I was crying like I had seen The Fault In Our Stars for the first time. Yeah, I was crying that much. He didn't say a word, "I probably shouldn't have told you this." I got off the cyberdesk, and started to walk away, but I felt a hand go around my wrist, yanking me back. I slammed into someone's chest and their arm was wrapped around my waist. I knew it was Chase. I buried my head into his chest and cried. He stood there, arms wrapped around my waist, hugging me. After a few minutes, I feel his hand go underneath my chin, and lift it up. I looked into his eyes, maybe for the last time, and he said, "I'm sorry. You are not an accident. If anything, you're a miracle," I couldn't believe that he was saying that to me. As much as I wanted to accept it, I couldn't because I knew it was wrong to think of myself like that. At home, I was always known as the accident. From his statement, I shook my head. He took his hand from my waist, and cupped my tearstained face. "Don't downgrade yourself like this, Jazlynn. You're a bright, happy person. I would've never expected that you lead a life like this," His words were motivational. They motivated me to stick up for myself. "Where does he hit you?" He asked me with pure concern. Instead of replying, I unwrapped myself from his arms. I rolled up my sleeves to show him all the marks that were on arms from my father and me. He took my right arm, and stroked it, touching every scar in the process. Each stroke made a scar seem to disappear. A few strokes later, and all the scars were...gone.
