Back to Base

May moaned as she gained consciousness again. Lifting her head off the bed, she looked down at her leg. The blood had dried and she couldn’t feel much pain. That was until she sat up and went to swing her legs round to the side of the bed. She gritted her teeth as a fiery pain coiled its way around her shin. Gripping the edge of the bed, she breathed deeply then out slowly, and pushed herself onto her feet.

As she landed her legs gave way and she crashed to the floor with a yell. This was by far one of the worst days of her life! But hearing a certain agents voice made everything that little bit more bearable.

“May!” she heard Coulson exclaim as he walked in through the automatic door, and stuffed his gun into his belt. Kneeling down he picked her up and sat her on a nearby chair. The morphine was wearing off. She tried to think of something else to keep her distracted from the pain, when she felt a slight rumble throughout the room.

“Are we taking off?” she asked Coulson, who had sweat beading on his brow. Wiping it away with the back of his hand, he sighed exhaustively and crouched down in front of her, taking her hands in his.

“We’re going back to base,” he began, “that stranger that kidnapped you and helped us escape, has taken Skye and teleported to who knows where-“

“What!?” May cried, shifting in her chair and frowning as her leg got worse, “How did this happen? I didn’t even know he’d got on the plane.”

“I was so busy worrying about you that I forgot him for a moment and if it wasn’t for Mike telling me that Skye, Jemma and he had gone, we wouldn’t have found them about to teleport. But it was too late. If I had known – if I had not trusted him none of this would’ve happened and Skye would be here-“

May shushed him and placed her trembling finger to his lips. He paused, staring into her deep brown eyes full of worry and anger.

“This isn’t your fault,” she said quietly, “none of us knew who this guy was or even what he was. He’s taken Skye and all we need to focus on now is getting her back, that’s our next move so when we get back to base-“

“You’re right, but there’s no way you’re coming with us, you need serious medical attention,” Coulson interrupted before May got the chance to make her own plans for the rescue mission. May became stubborn and glared at him as he stood up.

Oh no I’m coming with you!” she demanded but he wasn’t having any of it, to her dismay.

“You’re unfit for duty, you can’t even stand let alone walk!” Coulson shouted back. Looking on her disappointed face he sighed agitatedly and stepped closer to her, stroking her cheek softly.

“I need you to be safe… for me,” Coulson pleaded gently as possible. May hated leaving him to go out in the Field alone, but he was right. There was no way that she was able to go on a rescue mission in that state. So, holding up her hands in surrender she replied,

“Alright, just be careful and don’t do anything… dangerous.”

“Of course not, we going on a rescue mission to find a helpless girl in the hands of a super strong, teleporting freak, to a place we don’t know, and who also works for Hydra. What could possibly be dangerous about that?”
