Edit 29/11/2022: Fixed a """slight""" oopsie regarding a character's perceived age. Other than that, no changes.

================================================================================

WOO! Big update! 1½ chapters AND a new cover image!

This side chapter is basically just a bunch of semi-detached character/world/something else building. It's mostly irrelevant to the main story (except for one tiny bit, but even that ain't critical).

Also, yes, I did intend for this to just be a sort of mini-chapter, but I do now realise its just as long as, if not longer, than some of the main chapters. So uh, my apologies.

That being said, please enjoy the side chapter.

================================================================================

Other than all the stuff that happened in the morning, the school day progressed as you'd expect. There weren't even any incidents regarding Toshiro's uniform. He got a few looks from a One Star here or there, but mostly the day passed by without incident. Whether it was because he was with Ryuko for most of the time, or because of people didn't want to test out his strength, or simply because Gamagori had overlooked it earlier that day, he didn't know, or frankly care.

What he did know was that it was nice having a relatively normal school day as a whole group. The past few days since Ryuko's arrival had been chaotic to say the least, so for the three of them to have normal conversations for once was quite a breather.

Well, as normal as conversations in this school could get.

After the school day had ended, the trio were making their way back to the slums to have a packed dinner and a good night's sleep after the day's events. Something bugged Toshiro though – how empty the slums seemed.

"Man, this place looks half deserted." He commented while they were walking through one of Honno towns many alleyways.

"That's because of how many students get expelled after No Tardies Day! Don't worry, the slums'll be all packed right back up in a few days!" Mako answered happily, as if not fully understanding the implications of what she just said.

"Jeez, that's rough..."

"Tell me about it... I mean you and I have abilities which helped us complete that course, but for the rest of the students..." Toshiro trailed off as they turned a corner into another long alleyway.

"Toshiro..." Ryuko hushed her voice so that Mako hadn't the chance to overhear anything. "Could we... continue our talk from last night? L-later, I mean."

"Uh... Sure, if you want to." He wasn't exactly sure what spurred her to do this, but it certainly didn't seem to have any ulterior motive behind it.

"HURRY UP YOU GUYS, OR GUTS'LL EAT YOUR CROQUETTES!" Mako shouted out from down the alley. Apparently, taking an eye off her for a few seconds had given her enough time to already  be a dozen or so meters ahead of them.

'Odd...' Toshiro silently noted down, before shouting back a reply. "You go on ahead, we'll catch up in a sec!"

"OKAAAaaaaayyyy-!" Mako voice trailed off as she sped through the slums back to the clinic.

"Sometimes I feel that Mako is the strangest thing in this town. Not in a bad way, but still..." Ryuko commented jokingly, earning a chuckle from the boy at her side.

"Just the way Mako is. I mean, I've known her for 5 days now, you for 4, and yet I haven't seen her display any other emotions other than happy or panicky, and in a place were the death-or-near-enough penalty seems to be a common punishment that's saying something."
