"Y/n."

You pull your head out of your books and look up to see your best friend and crush, Michael standing in front of you with a toothy grin.

"Oh, hey. What's up?" You greet, feeling your cheeks heat up.

Michael pulls a seat up and sits on it backwards, his arms crossed over the top of the uncomfortable school chairs. Michael says nothing as he grabs your book and starts flipping through it, making you lose your place. A small gasp passes your lips as you reach for your book, but his quick hands pulls back, a smirk on his face, "Nu-uh, you're too slow!"

"Michael," You whined, slightly pouting, "That's my favorite book and I don't wanna lose my spot."

Michael chuckles and hands you your book back, "I have some good news to tell you."

You place your neatly decorated bookmark into the book and close it, "What kind of news?"

He starts smiling, his eyes holding a loving glint as he stared into space. Giggling, you wave your hand in front of his face making him snap out of his daze.

"Helloooo? Snap out of it, silly."

"Sorry sorry, "He apologizes and grins, "But, do you remember Lisa? The girl I've been talking to?"

You breath gets stuck in your throat when hearing her name. Putting on a faux facade, you nod your head, a pained smile on your face, "Yeah. I remember her."

Michael dreamily sighs, "Yesterday, I finally got the courage to ask her to be my girlfriend. I've been in love with her since Middle school."

You smile and ruffle his hair but on the inside, your heart was ripped out and stomped on a thousand times. Damn, this is what heartbreak feels like, huh?

Michael grins and shoos your hand away, smiling widely.

"I'm so happy for you! What did she say?"

tch, of course, she said yes, dumbass.

"She said yeah. I can't believe I actually got someone like her!"

You smile one last time before gathering your things, no longer being able to sit in the same spot as he talked about Lisa.

You swallow the lump in your throat and sling your backpack strap over your shoulder, your hand tightly grasping it, your knuckles turning white, "Well, congrats on your new relationship and I'm glad you got the one you l-love. I'll uh s-see you later."

Shit.

Your voice wavers and cracks, as salty tears brimmed your eyes. Get it together, y/n. You don't need to be crying, especially not in front of him.

Hastily, you move from around the table and head towards the door to leave. Michael, concerned and confused, he grabs your arm, stopping you.

"Hey, " he said, voice soft and gentle, "Where are you going?"

You blink back the salty tears that threatened to fall and sadly look at him and simply answer, "Home."

You shake your arm loose from his group and speed walk to the exit of the library. You keep your head down and quicken your steps, the padding of his feet loud against the school floor, "y/n, wait!"

You ignore him and continue to quickly walk. You grimace as your chest tightens, Why do I always do this to myself?!

"Y/n, seriously what's wrong with you?"

Michael catches up to you and grabs your arm, halting your quickened steps.

Whimpering, you plead, "Please let me go."

"No, tell me what's wrong with you."

You flinch at his tone and shake your head, black tear streaks cascading down your cheeks. Michael's face softens as he notices you flinch, guilt washing over him.

"I ju-just need some time alone. Please let me go, " you begged.

You wipe your face with the end of your oversized hoodie and take a shaky breath, your head pounding against your skull.

"y/n, ple-"

"Michael, I'm fine. Now let me go!"

Michael lets your arm go, his shoulder slump in sadness, "Fine."

You take a quick glance at him, but you look away twice as fast. His beautiful brown eyes, holding nothing but sadness and confusion. You take a deep breath and walk away, mind clouded with thoughts.

I was too late. I was hoping to be the one you loved, but you're already loving someone else.
