Gary, Indiana.

| YOU

TODAY was my first day of school. I recently moved from Los Angeles to Gary Indiana to be with my mother and stepdad after my father kicked me out for his new wife. I can't really say I'm too hurt about it, but it did kind of sting.

Anyways, I smooth out the skirt of my uniform and look at myself in the mirror. I fluff out my Afro and sigh, the butterflies in my tummy going crazy.

"Are you ready, honeybun?"

I hear my mother call from down the hall. I grab my book bag and badge and rush out of the room.

"Yes ma'am, I am." I head into the kitchen and see my baby sister, Anna sitting in her high chair making a huge mess. I smile and kiss her cheek before taking a seat and eating my breakfast.

"Make sure you finish quickly. I have 20 minutes to get you there and for me to get to work."

I nod my head and continue to eating.

We pull up to the school and my goodness, this building is nice. It wasn't a huge school but it was pretty decent sized. I slide my book bag over my shoulder and get out the car.

"Alright, bye baby. Be safe and have a good day. I love you!"

"I love you, too & bye bye Anna, I love you."

She smiles and makes her usual baby noises. I blow her a kiss and close the door, heading inside the building. I head to the receptionist desk and patiently wait.

"Yes ma'am, how may I help you?"

"Yes my name is ___ ___ and I'm new here and I just needed my schedule."

"Okay sugar just give me a few minutes. You can take a seat over there."

I smile and give a curt nod and take a seat. I fiddle with my fingers and watch as the students pass through the halls, socializing and goofing around with their friends. My hands grew clammy.

I feel my mouth go dry as I remember that I have no one to talk to. Gosh this is going to be a long day.

"Miss. ___? Here's your schedule."

I snap out of my thoughts when I see the receptionist standing in front of me, holding the paper in my face. I quickly apologize and stand up, taking the paper from her.

"I'm so sorry, I zoned out."

"It's okay, sugar. But I have someone that's going to show you to your class. I made sure they had the same schedule as you so you won't get lost."

I thank her and turn my head seeing, a girl waiting by the double doors. She was a short Hispanic girl, jet black hair and the prettiest eyes, smile and dimples. I give her a shy smile and walk towards her.

"Hey, it's nice to meet you, my name is Selena and I'm going to show you around for the day."

We walk in silence for a while before she speaks again,"I'm not sure how school was for you but here we do things a little different. Wednesday we have A classes and Thursdays we have B class. So today we only have 4 classes and they're all 2 hours long. The classes are math, English, history and science." She comes to a stop and knocks on the door then continues,"and Thursdays are electives. P.E. class is mandatory. But everything else is optional. We having cooking, art, choir, sewing, technology, hmm what else...oh! And cosmetology."

I stare at her as I try to absorb all the information she's throwing at me. Geez she's a fast talker. The door opens and out comes the teacher.

"Ah hella you must be miss. __? It's so nice to finally meet you! I want you to take a seat at the table at the back corner. Class will officially start in approximately 30 seconds."
