QUINJET - Stuttgart, Germany - 2012
"I said KNEEL!"
From above, the spectacle is astonishing to watch. Natasha and I are up in the Quinjet, listening to Loki command the crowd before him to kneel. It's truly a sight to see, this one man commanding this much attention and obedience. To Steve however, the sight is probably familiar and a bit triggering to say the least. Still, he insisted on going in there alone hence why I'm up here with Natasha, waiting patiently for Steve to make his entrance.
"Is this not this simpler? Is this not you natural state? It's the unspoken truth of humanity, that you crave subjugation. The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life's joy in a mad scramble for power, for identity. You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel." Loki's voice comes through Steve's end surprisingly sharp and clear.
Natasha lets out a low whistle. "Now he's monologuing. Man, this dude is really leaning into the whole supervillain thing." She mutters.
I press the button on the comm device, speaking clearly so that Steve can hear me. "Steve? Are you making your move yet?"
There's a crackle and a pop followed by Steve's voice. "Going in now. How do we look from above?"
"All clear up here Rogers," Natasha replies. "Let's take out the trash and get out of here."
"...there are always men like you." The voice of one of the citizens comes through to us, the thick German accent soaking into his sentences.
"Look at your elder people. Let him be an example." To our horror, Natasha and I watch as Loki raises his scepter to kill the man, the end of it glowing an icy blue color. My reaction is immediate, hand going to my wrist. But just as I'm about to freeze time and reverse it to give Steve more time to get in there, the beam of light that shoots out of Loki's scepter is intercepted.
"You know the last time I was in Germany and saw a man standing above everybody else, we ended up disagreeing." Steve hisses and a moment later, we see him straighten up, still protecting the civilian Loki had previously targeted.
"The soldier. A man out of time." Though we're too far away to see, I can hear the smile on Loki's face. I swallow hard, my eyes glued to the scene below me, hand hovering over my wrist.
"I'm not the one who's out of time." The Captain fires back. It's then that Natasha presses a button on the controls to deactivate the camouflage on the Quinjet.
Hand pressed to her headset, Natasha speaks directly to Loki, shining a light down on the crowd. "Loki, drop the weapon and stand down."
Instead of complying, Loki instead fires at us with his scepter. I react just as the beam of light is about to strike us down. Time freezes around me, stopping the strike from happening. For a split second, I freeze on the spot, having not expected myself to react that quickly. I guess Fury was right about my reflexes being much quicker than I'd originally thought. Beside me, Natasha is frozen in place, her mouth slightly open in shock and fear. I exhale slowly, trying to relax a little so I can focus.
