HELICARRIER - Detention Center - 2012

I race behind Fury as we make our way to the detention center as fast as possible, Fury's coat tangling between my legs as I struggle to keep up with him. When we arrive, the cell is empty, no Loki or Thor in sight. In fact, the whole area is devoid of any flesh and blood whatsoever except for Phil Coulson, who is seated on the floor, pale as a ghost, a giant gun of some sort resting in his lap. My own face goes pale at the sight, the reality of all of this setting in at last. Fury goes to him immediately, looking over his wounds, wincing at his state. All of the talk of gods, super soldiers, and billionaires in metal suits, something as natural and inevitable as death seemed...well, as otherworldly as gods, super soldiers, and billionaires in metal suits. But my delusions of grandeur regarding our indestructibility vanish as I see Coulson sitting there, bleeding out on the floor of the detention center. Swallowing hard, I slowly come up beside Fury, the harrowing sight unfolding before me like a bad dream I can't wake from.

"Sorry boss. They got rabbited." Phil rasps, blinking slowly.

"Just stay awake. EYES ON ME!" Fury demands, fear rising in his voice.

Phil shakes his head slowly, eyes glazed over. "No. I'm clocked out here."

"Not an option," Fury answers, clearly having trouble coming to terms with this. I've only known Phil for a short time, but it's enough for me to piece together how kind of a person he is. Fury suddenly turns to me, eyes wide and desperate. "Amy, you've gotta reverse time."

"Nick..." I replied dejectedly. Death is inevitable. No matter how many times I reverse it, no matter how many times I try to prevent it, fate always wins. Phil is going to die no matter what I do.

"Damn it Peters! LISTEN TO INSTRUCTIONS!" Fury roars at me, causing me to flinch at his harsh tone. Tears spring into my eyes at the helplessness I feel. It was one of the worst things about my powers. Being unable to reverse something devastating like this almost made the whole idea of going back in time pointless. If I can't save somebody I care about, why even bother?

"It's okay boss. This was never going to work," Phil gasps out. "If they didn't...have...something to..."

He breathes his last breath, leaving a grim silence in his wake.

Fury pulls away, eyes shining with tears. Nick presses a finger to his earpiece. "Agent Coulson is down." His hand drops to his side, just as paramedics bust into the room, crowding around Phil's body, prompting Nick and I to step back and watch. The silence on the other end of comm systems tells me that even Tony and Steve are having a moment for the fallen Phil. We both watch as the paramedics carry Phil away, a sheet draped over his body. Fury beckons me to follow him out of the detention center, feet dragging behind him. I lag a few feet behind him, my eyes glazed over, peering around the Helicarrier as if not truly seeing anything at all.
