"Rise and shine Greenie."

A yawn escaped my dry mouth as I sleepily rubbed my heavy eyelids. Blinking back exhaustion, I squinted, trying to make out the blurry form which stood in front of me. As my vision adjusted, the figure became clearer.

"Newt, what's up?" I mumbled.

"It's almost midday, get up. I've still got to give you the tour, then take you to questioning!"

"Questioning?" My mind whirred as I struggled to remember the events of my past few days. I remembered saying Newt over and over again when I had first got here, and then how I had been in a coma. Of course, they would want to try and find out why I'm... Different.

I stood up and stretched, Newt waiting patiently as I did so. Once I was done, I turned back to the taller boy, waiting for instructions.

"Wow, you don't look too good. Perhaps you should take a shower and get a change of clothes first, unfortunately we only have boys clothes... But I'm sure we can find something that would fit. Come on, greenie."

Horrified at how I must Inside,I started to follow Newt, who had already begun to walk away. He found me some clothes: a baggy white shirt (which I rolled up to my elbows) and denim trousers which I rolled up my calfs (just below the knee) where they stayed tight. Whilst I had my shower, Chuck and Newt waited outside, guarding the door from anyone who might... Try to enter. The thought made me shudder.

When I was done, Newt showed me around and told me the rules.

"1. Do your job, no slackers.

2. Do not harm another glader.

3. Never, and I mean never, enter the maze unless you're a runner."

"Why? What's out there?" I asked curiously.

Newt rubbed the back of his neck, obviously not in a hurry to tell me the answer. "I'll show you. Meet me over there-" he pointed to one of the walls, the one where the homestead was. "-when the doors close."

"What do you mean 'when the doors close'?"

"You'll see," Newt said with a chuckle.

For the rest of the tour he just showed me around the places Alby had pointed out yesterday. Our time was interrupted when Chuck came running up to us, informing us it was time for the gathering.

All three of us headed towards the homestead, and then me and Newt were ushered in to a room filled with a few other gladers (Chuck had to wait outside). Inside, I recognised Minho, Alby and Clint.

"First of all, Libellus if you would take a seat over there; everyone introduce yourselves," Alby spoke up over the hushed voices.

The boys were sitting in a semicircle, and infront of the circle was one chair. This was where I sat. Everyone introduced themselves, starting from the left.

"Clint, keeper of the med-jacks."

"Winston, keeper of the Slicers."

"Zart, keeper of the track-hoes."

"Frypan, keeper of the cooks."

"Gally, keeper of the builders."

"Minho, keeper of the runners."

"So, greenie, I'm Alby and I'm the leader. This is Newt, second in command. I'm guessing Newt told you the rules...?" With a nod from Newt he carried on. "Well, we need you to tell us all you can remember."

I racked my brains and told them as much as I could remember. I told them that I had a mother and a brother, who's names I had to stop to try and remember. Eventually I remembered my brother's, Sebastian, and I continued with my story. I told them how I loved reading, and how I was reading when my mind seemed to slip and... I imagined myself here (I told them, only just making the connection) and I was standing looking around when Newt had walked up to me and spoke in my mum's voice, telling me to stop scaring her. Then I told them how I had slept and when I woke, I threw up and green mist poured out of my mouth, as I spoke the words that were written on the paper.

"Wait... You imagined yourself here? And... I was there?" Newt, who had gone very pale, inquired.

"Yeah... Why? What's wrong?"

He shook his head in disbelief before answering. "It's just that... Before you got here, I was sleeping. And... I dreamt that you were here, in the glade. I didn't know who you were so I started walking to you, then a look of sorrow came across your face and I woke up."

"Wait, why are you only mentioning this now?!" Alby demanded.

"The time didn't seem right, I thought it was just a dream or maybe a memory... I don't know."

We all sat in silence for a few moments, then, Gally spoke up. He was a broad boy, but not fat. He must have had lots of strength to be able to be a builder. His face seemed to be set in a permanent scowl, making it rather ugly.

"I say we banish her."

At that, Newt and Minho stood up and started shouting at him, words that I could not make out. The other boys just stared in shock, although some of them were nodding.

"Silence!" Alby ordered. "Gally, what are your reasons?"

"She's a girl, we've lived here for years, only boys. She comes along with most of her memories and her weird story and it can't be right. I think this is a challenge from the creators, we should banish her, tonight!"

I opened my mouth to protest, but Alby sent me a warning look. Newt stood up again and started arguing back.

"She's a girl, a human being, we can't just banish her for something she can't help! It isn't her fault she still has most of her memories or that strange stuff has happened to her! I think she's special, and maybe Libellus will be our ticket out of here!"

"Let's take a vote, Libellus, if you could please wait outside," Alby instructed.

Newt came and walked me to the door, shutting it behind us as we stopped in the corridor.

"Okay, I'm not going to let them banish you, I'll go back in there and convince them," Newt whispered.

"What even is banishing?"

"I'll explain later, I've got to go back in there. Wait here... Please."

He left me standing in the corridor. I leaned my back against the wall and sank to the ground, burrying my head in my knees.

After what seemed like forever, the door opened and Newt came out. His expression was confusing, it was mixed with satisfaction and anger.

"Well? What happened?" I shot to my feet, startling him.

"Well you're not getting banished, yet, but you have to spend a night in the slammer. Starting now."

He grabbed my arm and gently pulled me towards the jail cells which Newt had called the 'slammer'. He opened the door and I stepped inside.

"You'll get a meal later, I'm sorry about this. It was the best I could do."

"It's fine Newt, thank you," I reassured him.

He nodded and turned away, leaving me alone in the dark cell.
