Back at the glade, we could see the sun just starting to rise over the top of the maze. Some boys had already started queing for breakfast, which is where we went. Once we had gotten our meal (which included a slice of toast and an apple) we went and seated ourselves at our usual table; Newt by my side.
"Ahem, can I... Can I sit with you?"
Me and Newt turned to see who had spoken: Minho. I shrugged, seeing Newt's eyes searching mine for approval. Minho joined us at the opposite side of the table, bringing Thomas and Chuck whit him.
Thomas always followed Minho everywhere, and Chuck always followed Thomas. I felt sorry for Chuck, he must have been one of the youngest there (probably about twelve) and he obviously admired Thomas. Unfortunately, it was also obvious that Thomas was best friends with Minho, and so Chuck was left following behind.
"Hey Chuck, what's up?" I asked, interrupting the silence in which we sat in.
Before answering, Chuck looked at Newt for approval (although why he needed approval from Newt to speak to me, I did not know), but Newt wasn't paying attention. He was pushing his food around his plate, deep in his thoughts.
"I'm fine, thank you Lib- Libellus," Chuck corrected himself. "What about you?"
"That depends..." I started, shooting a glare at Gally ,who was watching our table from the breakfast que. "I'll be fine, that is if it doesn't get decided that I should be killed-"
"You know I won't let that happen, Lib," Newt interrupted, snapping out of his thoughts.
I shot Newt a greatful smile, but I must have had some doubt in my eyes, because he didn't seem convinced. And to be honest, I didn't think I would survive. It was clear that bad things had only started happening when I showed up. Then, if I did get sentenced to banishment, I don't know what Newt would do. Either he would try to come with me or he would stay, and even then I wasn't sure what he might do.
"Have I missed something?" Thomas asked from across the table. I had almost forgot that he and the others were still sitting with us. I quickly bent my head to avoid my blush from being seen by everyone, is Newt ready to tell people?
Apparently yes, because Newt answered proudly: "actually, Libellus is my girlfriend."
The other three boys's mouths fell open, they were definitely surprised.
"Haha, I know right! I'm just as surprised as you are!" Newt laughed, placing an arm around my shoulders.
Suddenly not feeling very hungry, I pushed my hardly-touched breakfast away and started making an excuse to leave.
"Hold on-"
Minho said over me, standing up to stop me. I slowly turned to glare at him can't I just have a bit of peace and quiet?
"What?" I demanded harshly.
"There's a gathering to decide your... Fate. Come on, Newt let's go."
Minho grabbed my arm and started painfully pulling me towards the homestead. I kept my mouth shut, though, not wanting to look weak. Newt walked beside me, occasionally giving me reassuring smiles.
When we entered the gathering room, it was already full of all the keepers. Newt told me to go and sit in the chair that faced the semicircle of boys, so I did as I was told.
"Well, as we all know Libellus Hope has come here, in the box just like the rest of us, and has kept most of her memories. We are holding a meeting to determine if Libellus should be held accountable for the bad things that have happened here: 1. She came up in a coma and we had to use a lot of medical equipment to keep her alive. 2. Libellus was there when her and Minho found the remainders of a dead body in the maze. And finally, we have received no more supplies in the box and we will not be able to survive if this continues." Alby listed, turning his authority to the listening gladers in the small room.
"Libellus, do you agree to all that I have stated?" He asked, turning to me.
"Yes, but-"
"Is there anything you would like to add?" Alby interrupted.
I thought for a few moments, wondering if I should share my dreams. My eyes found Newt's in the group of boys and he nodded, ushering me to continue.
"Well... I've been having... Dreams. Although they're not really dreams..." I continued to recount to everyone the dreams that I had been having.
Everyone listened carefully, interrupting to ask questions at times. Once I had finished, Alby allowed everyone to share their arguments on what thye think should happen.
"I was with her when we found the dead body, there is no way she had anything to do with it. You can't fake how she reacted," Minho announced, starting off the debate.
"Maybe this is all a test from the creators, to see if we're smart enough to put all the facts together that Libellus is guilty," Gally argued.
"Or maybe they're wondering if we will be stupid enough to kill her when she is actually innocent!" Newt shouted.
The arguments continued like that while I sat there in an awkward silence. I sort of just wanted them to decide already so that I didn't have to listen to their stupid bickering!
Finally, Alby told everyone to quiet down, as it was time to figure out my sentencing. I had to wait outside, and Thomas and Chuck (who had been suspiciously waiting outside the door again) were told to gather all the gladers outside the homestead so my fate could be announced infront of everyone. The runners hadn't been allowed to go into the maze today because of it.
I wonder how Newt is coping. I thought, imagining the British boy sitting in the small room, quarreling with the other keepers. I already knew what the results would be, no way would they be able to find me innocent when all the facts made me look guiltier and guiltier by the minute.
After what seemed like forever, the keepers exited the small room. Newt stormed out first, his face was red with rage and he was definitely panicked. He came over to me and gave me a fierce hug, seeming not to want to let me go.
"Newt, what happened?" I had to ask, even if I didnt want to hear it.
Newt pushed me away so I could look into his eyes, which were glistening with tears.
"We're getting banished."
