"Well this is very cosy."
I shot up and blinked against the sun that was blinding my vision. Eventually, I could see Newt, who was sitting next to me, and Minho who stood in front of us.
"We've been looking for you shanks for hours, come on! Libellus we gotta go!"
"Go where?" I asked, confused.
"Your training with me starts today... We're going in to the maze."
My eyes drifted nervously towards Newt. His face was emotionless, but he still met my gaze.
"I'll give you two a minute. Lib, I'll see you back at the map room."
Minho turned and walked off, back through the forest. For what seemed like forever, me and Newt stayed silent.
"So..." I started awkwardly.
"Have you considered what I told you last night?"
I paused for a few seconds before answering hesitantly. "Yes... But I think you already know what I'm going to do."
By this time, Newt and I had already risen to our feet and we were facing each other, his figure looming over mine. Newt let out a breath I didn't know he was holding, and he pulled me in to his arms.
"Just promise me you'll come back to me--to the glade safe" he softly said, his head still in the crook of my neck, his breath hot against my skin.
"I promise."
Minho was leaning against the wall of the runner's building, a bunch of stuff lay piled at his feet.
"You took your time! Come on, put your shoes on, I already filled up your bag."
Once I was ready, we went to wait by the doors of the glade. All of the runners went in pairs, so a small group of them were gathered at each of the four entrances. Today I was with Minho, and Thomas (who usually ran with Minho) was with another runner. Almost as soon as we got there, a loud grinding noise filled the air all around us, and I looked around, panicked.
"The doors are opening."
Startled, I turned to see the source of the voice.
"Come to say goodbye, have you?"
Smirking, Newt walked over to where me and the other runners stood. When he got to us, he turned straight to Minho.
"Can I speak to you... Alone?" He asked.
"Of course, buddy" Minho replied.
The two boys walked away from me, but I could still hear part of what they said... Keep her safe. Newt was worried about me, Newt cared that I got back. I hastily turned away to avoid the blush that was creeping up to my face. Why did I have to be so awkward?
Once they were done, Newt and Minho walked back over to me together. Newt squeezed my shoulder before walking away without another word. I couldn't help but stare after him, my eyes watched him slowly limp away from us, never turning back once...
"Yo Greenie! You coming or what?"
I turned back around and followed Minho in to the maze. At first, there was just one long corridor, and all of the runners ran as a group. But after about five minutes the maze split in to several different directions, and each pair went a different way.
Minho kept at a steady pace, and I followed behind him easily, hardly breaking a sweat. My mind remembered all of the trurns we made, like Minho had asked me to do. Left, left, right, straight, right, left, straight...
Every now and then, Minho took out a knife that he kept in his belt and hit a chunk out of the wall so that we could find our way back. He barely slowed down while doing so.
"Alright, time for lunch."
Only after he said this did I realize how hungry I was, considering I missed breakfast. We both sank to the cobblestone floor and pulled our bags from our backs. In mine, Minho had packed sandwiches, an apple and a bottle of water, which I threw down my throat immediately.
"Woah slow down, you'll give yourself a stitch!"
Of course, I ignored this comment and continued to fill my rumbling stomach with food. After we'd eaten, Minho informed me that we should start heading back. We both gathered our things and turned the way we had come.
The sun was starting to set when I saw it. In the middle of the corridor, where we had passed through earlier, a pool of blood covered the floor. I stopped to try and find out where it had come from.
"Libellus we can't stop, the doors are going to close soon! We need to go!" Minho shouted urgently.
"No! Someone might be in trouble..."
Minho wouldn't listen to me anymore, so he grabbed my wrist and started pulling me away from the blood. Although that's when we saw the source of the blood... A mangled body, or what was left of it, lay further down the maze corridor. It's blood was everywhere, it's legs were no where to be seen.
The sight made me feel a bit sick, and my skin paled worryingly. All of a sudden, the floor was coming up to meet me and I heard a sickening thud as my head hit the floor and my vision went blurry...
-----------
Okay so I put a picture of the maze layout above (or to the side) for anyone who might be a bit confused with the way the glade looks. Hope it helps!
