Anchors.
Growing up with S.H.I.E.L.D., Avery was always taught to have an anchor; Something she could hold onto when times got tough.
Whether that be a person, item, or animal - everyone at S.H.I.E.L.D. had one.
These anchors grounded you. Made you stable. Stable enough to finish the job. They helped you gain control. Control was what you needed.
For Avery, her's was her S.H.I.E.L.D. family and friends - Phil Coulson, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Olive Stark, Natasha Romanoff, Clint Barton, and loads of other people who made her who she was.
It always was. Always would be.
But these anchors sometimes changed. After a while, they didn't work; They didn't have the same effect as before.
But some - only rarely - stayed the same.
No one at S.H.I.E.L.D. really told each other what their anchors were. It was a natural understanding to keep their anchors to themselves. It was the one thing no one knew.
Avery only really needed her anchor whenever she was fighting or under pressure in the field. Her anchor pushed herself to the limit. It made her focus, and push her emotions away.
She found herself using it in the training room, as she threw swing after swing at a punching bag.
Her dark brown hair was pulled back into a ponytail, swinging back and forth.
Avery had been in the training room for an hour already. She had completed her weapon training for the day and was onto combat. Over the years, she had been given some helpful pointers by famous agents, - like Natasha Romanoff, and Clint Barton - and she held onto those tips, using them as much as she could.
Fury and Coulson had been the ones to teach her how to fight, but she wanted to be better. She wanted to be like Natasha Romanoff, who could take someone down within a few seconds, or Melinda May, who didn't even need a gun.
Because she grew up in S.H.I.E.L.D., Avery had met loads of interesting people, such as the Avengers. She knew Nat and Clint because she met them when they joined S.H.I.E.L.D., and she also knew Tony Stark from when she babysat him, when he was rediscovering an element.
She also met Olive Stark, Tony's daughter, and helped her with training to become an agent. Avery passed down all the information to Olive that she had been taught.
Avery stopped the bag from swinging and ambled over to where her water bottle was sitting. She snatched the bottle, taking huge gulps, the cool liquid running down her burning throat, and collapsing on a bench by the boxing ring, catching her breath.
