Chapter One: Rising

A small and dingy apartment, small and dingy cupboards full of small cans of food and dingy little dishes. This place wasn't very well kept, it hadn't been for a while. Inhabited by a not so small but equally dingy individual, and another, rather small but less dingy child. They had lived in this place for 9 years, though there was a time it wasn't like this. A woman once stayed with them, friend to the dingy man and mother to the small child, the dinginess arose once she died. It took over the place that was once known as her home, now all that remained of her was a shirt and some small, now dingy looking, photos.

"Kristiaaaaaan" groaned a young boy's voice, it emerged from a bed coated in blankets like a log covered in moss. He had called out to the dingy man and didn't get a response, Kristian was still sleeping. The kid crawled from beneath the blankets, what covered him now were a pair of shorts and a rather large pink top. With his tiny feet he plodded to the other end of the small and dingy apartment to the next room over, opening the door with a soft creek and entering. He looked around, hung up were the clothes belonging to Kristian. This included some assorted jackets and tank tops along with various pairs of jeans in all sorts of states of wear.

"Kristian" here was the young boy's voice once again, this time quieter and lighter. The morning groan was fleeting and faint but still apparent, it was a high pitched voice, one of a young boy who had yet to come of age. A body shifted under a thin sheet as it was tapped a few times, it was thrown aside to reveal an almost nude man in his late 20's.

"Danny... what have I told you...?" Krstian spoke in a rough and scratchy voice, it was deep and yet inviting, one would feel safe around this voice.

"I know, don't come in, blah blah blah, leave me alone in the morning. I get it, but it's the afternoon now and I'm getting hungry. Laying awake under all my blankets does get boring sometimes. Though you wouldn't get that" He took a snarky tone and spoke under his breath, thinking he would be free of K's hearing but that hope was short lived.

"You think I like being stuck unable to move? I don't stay here sleeping for hours Danny, I feel paralysed. My eyes close kiddo, but I ain't resting." He was upfront with the kid, he wasn't one to lie nor hide his emotions. Kristian was an honest man when it came to his sorrow and hardship, he made no fuss but kept those around him aware that he cared not for them and their strife or even his own. He would act like a brick wall with signs and warnings hung up all over it, though there was a door that Danny often walked through. It's hidden, but once you find it you can easily go there again. Beneath all that angst and anger is a beating human heart, he loves Danny and cares for him deeply, more so than he is willing to let on.

"Oh, sorry" Danny knew he'd upset Kristian with what he'd said, his words were quiet.

"Don't worry kiddo, it's fine. You hungry then?" Kristian was calm, not seeming to care too much for Danny's backchat or apology, neither mattered much to him.

"Well, yeah, been up for a while now." He often spoke back, especially when Kristian got on his nerves. Without a response the large figure disappeared behind the closing door, clothes shuffled about and eventually he returned. Walking now to the kitchen, silently as always, on the other side of the apartment, he rummaged through the few remaining items left in them and came out with two options.

"Beans or Porridge?" The question was simple, Danny stared from across the space and thought for a moment, coming up with something very absurd.

"Both?" Before he could even open his mouth to say it was a joke he was interrupted by Kristian.

"No, don't be stupid. You can have the porridge and I'll have the beans. We're shopping after this." He sighed and put down both tins along with two pans to separately heat them in, he hadn't paid the gas bill in a while so he'd been using his ray to heat things up. With a swift click the two pans caught ablaze with both meals inside, they cooked quickly and were served up a few minutes after they'd cooled off slightly. Danny had been sat at the small table they shared, he was messing around with a flake of the wood that had been chipped off. They ate together in silence, this is how most meals went with these two, well, Danny would try to talk but often Kristian didn't give him the attention. His mouth opened for a second but it was cut off instantly by a thud on the door, a few more followed until Kristian opened it, a large figure in a white coat stood beyond the threshold and handed on a letter. Kristian argued quietly with this man, Danny couldn't make out what they were saying but after the door closed Kristian turned around and held up the letter

"Notice of eviction? What? What does that mean?" Danny was confused, he didn't know the word but Kristian seemed concerned.

"They're kicking us out the apartment, apparently bills not being paid and illegal use of rays can get you thrown out." Kristian was being sarcastic, of course that would get them booted out onto the street. He went up to Danny, the young boy was mumbling to himself, the words weren't too clear but once he had reached the child and wrapped his arms around him they became louder.

"But then we'll have nothing left... Mum... this was everything she worked for. Without this place she'll be gone forever, where will we even go? Do those people not care?" His head collapsed into Kristian's chest and tears ran down the dark vest top, it stank of smoke and burning wood but he didn't care, he held onto Kristian with a grip unparalleled by anyone, he never wanted to let go off his mother's memory and without their home he only had Kristian left, he wouldn't let this slip from his grasp. The two were shocked by this news but showed it in different ways, while Kristian acted as usual to mask his emotions, Danny weeped into the arms of his guardian and hoped that they would find a way through this.

"We'll be fine kiddo, I can take care of this, I can take care of anything" Kristian's voice had a shake in it, like he wasn't sure if he was lying to himself. Danny stayed quiet, his head nestled into the chest of the large man he clung to with all he had.

A moment passed and the two had begun gathering whatever it was they thought was needed to travel somewhere new to begin fresh, while the young boy gathered pictures and possessions to remember their home, Kristian took only what was important. Food and clothes were what they needed, his stash of illegally sourced money was taken from its hiding spot as well.
