Chapter Nine: Nina

She took the boy's hand but he threw her aside, she landed in the sand pit with tears in her eyes, he looked at her and spat in her face. "I don't care what you wanna say! Just shut up you bitch, stop talking to me. And don't follow me home again, it's creepy." His words came like cannon shots to her heart, she had fallen for this boy months prior and had been trying to hang out with him. But everyone had heard of the girl and her hands, she stole emotions and read people like books, everyone was warned to stay away.

"Please Aaron! I like you, don't do this." She was weeping, sand had been flung in her eyes and she rubbed it out along with the tears and spit. On her hands and knees she followed after him but he kicked her down, his foot landed in her stomach twice more until more kids came over. As they crowded round the boy, Aaron, spoke.

"Look everyone, she's begging! Ha, and crying like a little baby, pretending like these are her emotions. She steals them from babies, she's evil!" More of them joined him, laughing and cackling like hyenas. They threw stones at her and kicked her, these were all 12 year olds but their boots were as ruthless as the feet of demons. They tormented her, it lasted half an hour longer until they all got bored after she passed out.

An adult had come across the child and rushed to her aid, but as it was revealed to be Nina Eldritch they spat on her and walked away just like the others did. The disgraceful acts of these people were the last straw, she arose two hours later as the light of the moon shone above her. She looked at it through tear and blood soaked eyes with only one wish, to run away to the moon and be all alone. She always looked up to the moon, a sanctum for those who want to be alone, that's how she saw it. It was her true home, each night she'd run away in her dreams to the beautiful land of craters, leaping away from her troubles and leaving the cursed world behind. It kept her calm, as they stoned her and booted her she only thought of one thing, maybe if she was lucky they'd send her away to the moon.

"Papa... is this really my fault? Do I deserve it?" Her voice was hoarse, her throat was dry of anything but blood, she spat it out as she lifted herself up. Her balance wavered, legs trembling with pain so great she thought it would never go away. So young yet she was almost out of time, she didn't want to die, but she was so weak. She couldn't do anything, she wasn't able to protect her father or her baby brother.

"Run kid, leave this place, you still have a heart in you. Don't waste yourself here." The voice crackled, it seemed to come from all around her yet deep within her soul, looking around there was nothing there. Tears streamed down her face as she hobbled along the quiet night roads of the coastal town, reaching a shipyard full of different industrial crates. With an exhausted sigh she slumped into one of them and laid there, hoping she wouldn't be noticed when it was hauled off to some random place, all she wished for was to be somewhere far away. Like the moon, if only, if only she could be alone.

Weeks had passed and luckily for her she had hidden away in a crate full of food and supplies, she didn't care if it left less for anyone else, her own life was what mattered to her. If she was nothing to anyone else she'd treat them like they were nothing too, with that new motto she aligned herself with it was time to take things into her own hands. No longer was she going to be a punching bag for those that were afraid of her.

"Come on you, get back in here." This voice wasn't like those she heard back then, he was so kind, so caring and pure. Danny was his name. She had gone out to look at the faint silhouette of the moon, just barely visible in the light of the sun, they were eating together before this. Her, Danny, and Kristian, they then returned to their food and talked about what the plan was after they left this town. It was... nice, she hadn't felt something so warm and embracing as this overwhelming inclusion into their lives. She had run from her family, the only others that loved her, but she wasn't alone anymore. It was of her own accord, she couldn't look back and think they abandoned her and hated her, that would be stupid. She left to protect them, so the townsfolk wouldn't be so cruel to them like they were to her. But nevermind that, everything was ok now.
