Chapter Five: Feelings

About an hour had passed since their first interaction and in this time they walked silently to the small town that the girl was staying at, Kristian was treated and they left for the house of their new acquaintance. As she described, her home was small, very small. Almost like an apartment sized house, one open plan room for everything but the bedroom and bathroom, she made them two cups of water and let the young boy rest on the bed, he'd had quite the day so far. This left Kristian and the girl alone to talk in the main room, they were sat on a sofa pointed at a window, the only view was the rocks in the distance.

"So, what's your name, kid?" Kristian didn't care but he thought it would at least be nice to ask, the girl responded softly, she too did not care for the question. Neither of the two parties intended on spending any more time together after this, but it wasn't like it would hurt.

"I'm Nina, what about you, big guy?" Just as he had called her 'kid' she called him 'big guy', neither of them liked what the other said. She tried to move her hand to tap him on the shoulder but before she could he stood up.

"I'm Kristian, and the boy is Danny. Once he's good to go we'll be out of here." Kristian wasn't one for conversation, his raspy tone and uninterested look often deterred others from ever starting one so he at least had that going for him. But this girl Nina was persistent.

"Where were you headed? And why take your son with you through this place?" She thought the only reason the two were travelling together were cause they were related, and the large age gap made the likelihood of brothers a little less possible than father and son, though of course both these thoughts were wrong.

"He's not my kid, I'm looking after him for someone. And as for why we're here I don't think that concerns you." He shook his head and turned toward the bedroom. "Danny." He called. "We're going in ten, got it?" The boy had fallen asleep in the other room and didn't respond, Kristian walked in to see him curled up on the girls bed, he didn't bother him. Nina had walked up behind him and placed her hand on his shoulder.

"For someone you're just looking after you really care about him, and for someone that saved your life you're pretty mad at me, kinda rude don't ya think?" Her hand was batted away, he turned to her and scowled.

"Cause I'm not letting you read me like you do with everyone else, so don't touch me." He had caught on quickly as to what her ray was, of course he didn't know the details but the basics were clear to him.

"Oh? So you can tell what my ray is? Pretty impressive, but it doesn't mean you have me all figured out, you know." For being much younger and much less physically strong than him, she had no fear of the man she had enraged. "You're not as frightening as you think, I know you're just scared of what I'll figure out." Her power worked for a short time after contact was made, Kristian hadn't figured out that part. "I get that you're afraid of people knowing what's really going on in there." She pointed to his head. "But you can't hide it forever, and stop being so angry, you're pissing me off too." She felt his anger, it was like a fire burning in her chest, the man was something else. While she felt everyone's emotions when she made contact with them, the effect was never this strong, and it hadn't lasted this long either.

"Quit it or I'll burn you, I'm not letting some brat who's only, what, 14, tell me how I feel. You better shut up, girl. I'm not looking to fight a kid." He was always so rude, for obvious reasons this time though, she was being very intrusive on his personal emotions. And for someone like him that really pushed his buttons.

"Ok, ok, no need for threats. I'll leave you and your kid alone, but at least tell me where you're going." She wasn't speaking in such a condescending tone anymore, maybe she was being sincere but Kristian didn't care.

"Why do you need to know? It's not like you're coming with us." He sighed and sat back on the sofa, crossing one leg over the other as he laid back slightly. Nina joined him and looked at him with the side eye.

"What if I want to come? Can't stay in this dump forever, and hey, the people hate me anyways." With no second between words, Kristian spoke.

"I hate you too, so you're not." He wasn't taking any shit from her, and he certainly wasn't taking her with him. having to deal with that nosey brat would be one hell of a punishment in his eyes. Just a minute with her was infuriating.

"Come on, you know you need someone who actually knows their way around this place, cause you obviously don't. And would Danny want a friend closer to his age, someone to play with. Not to mention I saved your ass so you can at least do me a favour to pay me back." She was annoying, so incredibly annoying, Kristian couldn't stand the fact that she made a valid point, it was so damn annoying.

"Just as long as you shut up and don't touch me, I'm not having a little girl snooping around my mind." He actually accepted, she was going to join them on their trip to his old home. The girl jumped up on the cushions and cheered, it was almost like Danny when he got excited, well, they were both just kids. No, she wasn't a kid, she may be young but the way she took care of herself and presented herself was much more mature than any child.
