Chapter Six: Travelling

A grunt and a groan came from under the covers, a body stretched and twisted, from beneath the blankets a little boy crawled out. Danny looked around and for a second felt like he was at home but really he was at the girls house, he walked to the bedroom door and peered round it. Looking around he saw the girl drinking a cup of orange juice, she looked back at him with a smile on her face. "Hiya Danny, good to see you're up." Her voice was soft and kind, he smiled back at her. At that moment Kristian walked in with a bag in his hand, the smell of food was strong from it.

"Good to see you again kiddo." He smiled too, Danny was confused but it was nice to see him happy. Why was Kristian smiling though, he was in a place full of people and a girl he didn't seem to like, never mind that though.

"What have we got?" He rushed up to his guardian and looked into the bag, he was tapped on the shoulder by the girl. She looked at his little face, smiled and then spoke.

"I sent this guy out for some fish, he said you'd never tried it before. Luckily we get shipments over here, I was surprised they sent fish this far inland too." She walked to the counter top in the corner of the room and waited for Kristian to bring the food over.

"Yeah kiddo, I got you some battered fish, it's gonna be your new favourite." Now it was clear why Kristian was a bit happier than usual, Danny remembered when he told him about how much he liked the fresher fish he used to have rather than the tinned stuff. Danny smiled at the two of them and rushed to the counter with Kristian.

Their food was prepared already, all they did was heat it up. Kristian took care of that. The three of them sat on the sofa together and chowed down on the delicious fish. Danny's eyes were wide and bright from the first bite, Nina was enjoying it just as much, and Kristian ate slowly to savour every bite. After they'd finished eating Kristian told Danny about how Nina was going to be joining them, he was excited that she was going to be travelling with them. He was grateful for the fact that she saved them, and he was just waiting for someone else to talk to other than Kristian. With him it was mostly silence but now it was gonna be more lively.

"You're just the cutest, your green eyes and those pointy ears are adorable." As they walked along the dusty roads, Nina was holding hands with Danny, the two talked a lot while Kristian led them from in front. Danny smiled at what she said, it was different from how others spoke to him.

"Thanks Nina, your ponytail is cute too. And I love those earrings, they're dangly." Despite his age, Danny was very much like a younger child. Seeing as though education was lacking where he lived, he was never very often around people his age and he was always kept away from content for older kids. Being only 2 years older some would think Nina wouldn't be much different from Danny but as she was in education and often took care of herself she is much more mature.

Kristian looked back at the kids and shook his head. "I'd shut you up but I can't be arsed, you're lucky." He didn't want to shut them up, in actuality he would've liked to talk with them, though he wasn't gonna let them know that.

"Hey." Nina looked down to Danny and smiled. "No need to be self conscious of your hands by the way, I can tell you're feeling nervous, I'm only guessing it's cause of your hands. Are they something to do with your ray? Is that why?" She was as intrusive as ever, Danny looked a little uncomfortable. She let go of his hand "Sorry, that's my fault" Kristian turned to her and just stared, he didn't need to say a word, she knew he was gonna tell her to shut up. They walked on in silence for a little longer until Danny took her hand again, she was surprised but now she saw the boy was more comfortable and happy, she smiled.

"It is, I produce light. Not just any light, The Light. It causes problems though." He was hiding something about his ray but unlike her normal behaviour she didn't ask any questions.

"That's really cool, when I touch someone I can feel their emotions as if they were my own. It lasts a little after I make contact with someone too, it kinda makes me forget who I am for a minute, so I guess it causes me problems like yours. And like I told that guy, people hate me for it, or maybe they just hate me. I never actually read a lot of them to know enough. Well, I'm done rambling" She chuckled and looked at the boy, he was smiling.

"Well, I don't hate you" Just a few words but she felt so happy, she stopped and hugged the little boy, squeezing him tight. He returned the feeling and Kristian simply watched, he looked as careless as usual but beneath that he was smiling, Danny made a friend.
