Later that day, Daehyun and I packed our bags in the black SUV that was parked in the garage.
Daehyun got behind the wheel, and I pouted slightly, expecting him to come and open my car door for me. I shook it off and hopped in the passenger's side.
He put the car into reverse and backed out of the driveway, and then switched gears. Before I knew it, we were cruising down the street to start our long journey.
Suddenly, a thought popped into my head. "Hey, Daehyun?" I prayed that I wouldn't get in trouble for asking this.
He hummed in response, clearly waiting for me to continue.
"What did you do with the Matoki? I mean, you didn't just leave him there, right?" I snuck a sideways glance at him, crossing my fingers that he wouldn't be mad.
Daehyun's grip on the steering wheel tightened. "Why do you care so much about him?" He snarled. "I'm the one you love!"
His words shocked me. "Daehyun..." I reached open to place my hand soothingly on his arm. "You know that I love you. There's no need for your outburst, okay?" I turned my head to fully look at him and bit my lip. "I'm just asking because I'm afraid that he'll get loose and come after me."
His expression softened. "I know, Jae. I'm sorry...There's just been so much stress lately and I've barely gotten any sleep in the past few days." He took one hand off of the wheel to rub his forehead. "Tracking you down was tough work, you know."
I grinned at that. "Well, maybe that's my way of playing hard to get!" I teased, playfully smacking his arm.
"Yah, you're gonna cause me to wreck the car, you pabo!" He shouted, but couldn't help bursting into laughter.
After a few moments, he turned dead serious. "I don't want you talking about that creature anymore, you hear me?" His voice was flat.
I sighed, but nodded in agreement. Maybe thinking and talking about this whole situation was making me more stressed than I already was. If I stopped bringing it up, it would prevent Daehyun from being on edge so much. It was for the best, as much as I wanted to prod into exactly what was happening.
We made a few stops along the way, to get something to eat, to go to the bathroom, etc.
After about 12 hours of straight driving, Daehyun had gotten to the point where he would start to fall asleep behind the wheel. He kept persisting on continuing the trip, but I was luckily able to convince him to stop at a hotel so we could both get some sleep.
I saw a sign for a hotel a few miles down the road, and soon enough we were checking in.
Personally, I wouldn't mind staying there for a few days, but Daehyun wouldn't hear of it. He wanted to get to TS headquarters as soon as possible.
We got the keys and made our way up to the room, unlocking it with ease.
It was a bit much. The bed was huge, which I blushed at, considering that, yes, I loved Daehyun, but I hadn't slept in the same bed as him before. Unless you count where he forcefully carried me into his room when I was already asleep. So I guess I haven't willingly slept with him yet.
The bathroom was nice, no bathtub, just a showerhead, and I was grateful because no matter how much they claim to clean these hotel rooms, I always feel uncomfortable in the bathrooms. Who knows how many germs could be in there?!
The rest of the hotel room was nice. There was a cute little kitchen, a comfy couch, and a flat-screen TV. Hell, it was even better than my whole house!
"So, do you wanna shower first?" Daehyun's low, sultry voice came from behind me, and I nearly jumped ten feet in the air.
"Yah!" I placed my hand over my heart, willing it to beat normally. "Don't do that! You almost gave me a heart attack, Jung Daehyun."
His tone changed, clearly amused. "You've gotta be alert, Jae-ah!" He chuckled. "You didn't answer my question."
"Yeah, I'll go first." I grumbled. "That wasn't funny, by the way. I could've died."
Daehyun snorted and rolled his eyes. "Whatever, pabo! Just don't take too long in there. I need my beauty sleep, and we've got another long drive tomorrow."
"I know," I sighed and pulled out my pajamas and a towel, slowly walking over to the bathroom. "I just can't wait until we get on the boat!"
The agent furrowed his eyebrows. "Boat? Why would we need a boat to get to headquarters?"
I shrugged. "You told me that TS was over on a remote island, so I figured that we would be taking a boat." I paused and looked at him. "Unless we take a plane."
Daehyun shook his head firmly. "Youngjae, we don't need a plane...or a boat. It's just straight driving." He gritted his teeth. "I must've told you wrong about where it was located."
No, you didn't. I thought to myself. I didn't want to argue anymore, so I kept my mouth shut and went into the bathroom, shutting the door behind me.
I walked over to turn on the water, making sure to put it on warm. The water being scorching was like walking through hell and it being freezing was like falling into a huge pile of snow. Both while being fully naked.
Before I could rid myself of my clothing, I heard Daehyun's voice. I pressed my ear up against the door. Who was he talking to?
"...yeah. The idiot totally fell for it. He thinks I'm his precious Daehyun. What a dumbass!"
What?
"No, he's not in the room! Do you think I'm that stupid?!" He growled. "He's in the shower, and thank god for that because humans smell awful."
What the hell is going on? He lied to me? I started to panic, unsure of what to do.
"Yeah, I'm about two days away from headquarters, Boss. See you soon!"
I pulled away from the door, sinking to the ground. Why would he trick me like that? I was so stupid for not realizing that he wasn't the real Daehyun! My eyes widened. But that means that...Oh, god! My Daehyun was the one who was all beaten and bloodied. My heart sunk. How could I not tell?
I needed to get away from the Matoki. And fast. I had to find the real Daehyun so he could protect me and take me to TS.
Forgetting about taking a shower, I hesitantly turned the doorknob and stepped out, flattening against the wall. I didn't see Daehyun anywhere, which was a good sign. Maybe my escape would be easy-
"Youngjae?" I froze and looked to the direction where the voice had come from. Daehyun was sitting in a chair in a corner of the room, reading a book. "Where are you going, chunsa? I thought you were showering."
I swallowed and prayed that my voice wouldn't come out shaky. "Um, I was just gonna go get some air. I don't feel very well."
"Oh, my poor baby. I'll come with you." Daehyun started to get out of his seat, but stopped when I put up my hand.
"Nah, thanks Dae, but I think I'll be okay. I won't be gone very long, okay? Save a spot in bed for me!" I fake smiled, making sure it was convincing enough.
He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, but nodded. "Hurry back, Jae-ah."
I breathed a sigh of relief when I made my way down the hall and into the lobby. I made sure to steal glances behind me to see if the Matoki had seen through my lies and had come looking for me.
I cheered in silent victory when I exited the hotel and stole away into the woods behind the large building. Still no sign of Daehyun, which was a great thing.
"Shit!" I swore and bit my lip, wincing in pain when my foot had gotten stuck in a hole and twisted in a non-human way. The pain was unbearable, but I used my love for Daehyun to drive me forward. I needed to get to him.
I took a few more slow steps, before hearing twigs crunch behind me. My eyes widened in fear, and I ducked behind a nearby tree, hoping that I wouldn't be seen. Luckily, it was nighttime, so the darkness was on my side.
Footsteps got louder as they approached my hiding position, and just when I thought the figure could spot me, they stopped completely.
I sighed and stood up, glad that whatever it was, had lost interest in me.
I went to turn around, before being slammed up against the tree, being held by my neck.
Daehyun's eyes stared into mine with pure rage. "Did you think that you could just run away like that, you stupid brat? I didn't want it to come to this, but you leave me no choice, Youngjae."
I wanted to scream, but my voice was caught in my throat from the pure fear coursing through my veins.
I had no more time to think before a rag was pressed up against my face, and the odor of chloroform invaded my nostrils.
