Sophie Smith is a foster girl who's bounced around from state to state, "looking for her forever family," but Sophie's not stupid. She knows she doesn't have one. Her newest family, the Evanses, seem nice, but Sophie knows they don't really want her...
"Up, up, up!" proclaimed Evie on Monday. Edward and Doug had finally been told the entire story, and while I suspected that Dylan and Ethan both had no idea what exactly had transpired on Homecoming night, nobody (unfortunately) was allowing me to skip school. However, Evie had taken it upon herself (apparently, she and Ty had gotten back together) to be my new caretaker, as I had spent the past two days wearing the same pajamas, and I had only changed out of my Homecoming dress because Evie made me.
Now, she had woken me up early so I could take a nice long shower, wash off the remnants of my Homecoming makeup, shave my legs, and basically not look like a hobo.
When I returned to my room, wrapped in a fluffy hot pink bathrobe that I blamed on Evie's pink phase (thirteen through fifteen, thanks to the family photo album and the family stories I knew that all Evie had bought were things in pink), it was to find that Evie had laid out an outfit for me: a white sweatshirt I assumed belonged to Evie that read Women Are Powerful, some dark jeans, and black army boots.

Once I'd dressed, I put my hair into a high ponytail using one of the scrunchies Evie had graciously donated to me, and then headed downstairs. Ethan was making out with Tanya at the table - apparently, he really had slept with her on Homecoming night, and for whatever reason, Tanya hadn't dumped him yet - and it was awkward for basically the entire family.
"Excuse me," Evie shot at him. "We're trying to eat."
I pushed away my empty plate. Not anymore.
"You know what," Evie said, snatching Ethan's car keys, "we'll just pick something up at Dunkin' Donuts."
"Yeah, isn't that the place where whores go?" Tanya broke away from Ethan long enough to say.
"Tanya," Ethan said uneasily.
"Excuse me?" Edward exclaimed angrily, but Tanya ignored him, waiting to see what my reaction would be.
"What's a whore, Daddy?" Kaia asked Doug, who merely shushed her and informed her never to say that word, ever again.
"What are you talking about, Tanya?" I asked wearily, and gleefully Tanya unlocked her phone, displaying pictures of me at Homecoming.
With Dylan.
With Ethan.
Even a brief moment when I had stopped to congratulate Ricky and Maxton on finally coming out.
I would've felt sick, but honestly, I didn't have the energy to feel anything. I just felt numb. "It's going all around school," exclaimed Tanya gleefully.
"Babe, that was kind of rude," Ethan said uncomfortably, as he dealt with the glares of his entire family.
"Whatever. If it makes her happy," I said tonelessly, grabbing my backpack. "I can walk to school, Eves, it's okay."
