Elaine's POV

Flashback

Guarding the fountain of youth was a boring job. Not seeing anyone for long stretches of time and when I did see someone they would often be a thief who I would have to kill. Not boring, I guess just lonely. There was a girl once who kept me company for a few days every four or so months, but she hadn't been back in a while. As I usually did, I let my mind slip into thoughts of my friend and brother. I'm broken out of my trance by someone climbing the tree and singing.

"Just a drop on your tongue adds ten years to your life and a good shallow gives you a hundred more, drink it all and you'll live forever" a tall man with white-blue hair sings as he swings himself up into the tree. I stand beside him and wait for him to notice me. "Umm, what's up little girl are you lost or something," the man asks as he leans down to my level. "I'm here guarding the spring" I replied. The man looks confused as I use my power to blast him out of the tree, you'd have to be extremely lucky or inhuman to survive a fall at this height. I resume my doing nothing as I hear that song again. The man is climbing the tree. Once he reaches the top I intently use my power to blast him out of the tree. A few minutes last I hear him again, why the hell is this human so persistent. I blast him away before he reacts to the top. He tries a few more times before yelling at me.

"Dam it will you just stop".

"You're the one who needs to stop around here" I yell back. "How are you even alive, no human could survive a fall from this heigh" I add.

"Well I did get caught on a branch once and yeah, I fell into a clump of trees another time" he explains.

"Is that true? Why would the forest try to save a human like that?"

"Ha, oh please, like I care," he says walking towards me. "I still can't believe a little thug like you is the guardian of this secret treasure, but now it's my turn to get serious," the man says taking out a three-part staff and twirling it around.

"You only kill and steal, you all this the same, you want something without earning it," I think out loud. The man's eyes become serious and his staff starts to glow. "That's magic," I say still thinking out loud.

The man uses the staff to reach behind me are grab the chalice, bringing it to his hand.

"Not bad, doesn't smell like booze though," he says and I start to panic.

"Well, bottoms up," he says with a smile.

"No you can't" I shout and use vines and branches to restrain him.

"You better get these things off me right now" he demands. Who was he to make be making demands? if I wasn't mad before I certainly was now.

"I'm finished trying to make you humans understand but if the fountain of youth disappears everything in this forest will wither and die, so give up your quest and leave this place," I say, not sure why I bothered explaining at all. No one ever listens.

"Oh alright fine," he says unexpectedly.

"Huh, how dare you lie to me like that was do you need alright fine".

Hahaha, honest". He says smirking again. He doesn't realize I can read the minds of humans. I start to read his mind.

Man, this really sucks, I was hoping to see Gwen again and be able to stay by her side this time. Not to mention the ale made from this place is seriously good stuff it'd be a shame not to be able to have it anymore. Humf this was such a bust.

He means it. And was he talking about my Gwen? I release the man from the vines. He looks around confused.

"Unbelievable who in the world are you," I ask observing the tall man.
