Beyond Gone (Watty Awards 2011: Comment/Vote/Fan)

Case One ~ Part 4

Chapter Seven-

"So Kylie's being targeted..." Augustus murmured to himself as he gave Kylie a once over. Penetrated under his gaze, she couldn't help but glance away at the window as her face grew more heated. The sun had already set.

"That doesn't make any sense," Ronny murmured by her side, a warm hand pressed parentally on her shoulder, "Why is she being attacked all of a sudden?"

"I'm not sure. Kylie doesn't fit the physical appearance and social standing that most of the victims seemed to have about them. She doesn't fit the criteria."

"What do you mean?" Kylie asked, her brown eyes widening a fraction as she felt Ronny's hand on her shoulder slacken; beginning to pull away.

"I mean what I just said. The girls that were attacked were well known around the school and quite popular with the male students. I'm trying to figure out the details that pin-point the attack on you..."

With Ronny's hand now released from her shoulder, Kylie's thought's cleared and it took everything for her not to attack Augustus at that very second, "Did you just call me unpopular and unattractive?!"

"Average looking." He corrected Kylie, "But yes-I believe you said it for me." Giving her his trademark smirked; obviously amused at her reaction as humour flickered across his often emotionless eyes.

Sebastian quickly took a step in between the two as Kylie took a threatening step forward; blocking her way to Augustus. "Now now," he said, his jaw tense as his head switched back and forth between the two of them, "This isn't the time to get into a disagreement."

"That's right," Ronny said as he took a step to Sebastian side, barricading Augustus further, "Right now we have to figure out what's going on."

Sighing, she heard Augustus's voice over the two hulking figure's in front of her, "Mr Lenard, have you found any further information on the girls?"

Finally, Ronny's shoulders slacked as he took one final glance in her direction and seemed to take it as though his being wasn't necessary. Taking a final step back, Kylie caught Augustus's gaze before she quickly flickered her eyes back to Ronny. "We did find something." He said, his voice rumbling gruffly.

This time it was Jared's tern to take a step forward into her line of site from wherever he had been standing prior. "The students wouldn't say anything at first. But when I asked them, and not the old man, they sung like a canary."

Ronny growled, still not taking Jared's humour lightly, he continued, "They said a week before a male student arrived, strange things started happening. Nothing supernatural; but the girl's friendship sort of wavered."

"He was attractive, so he automatically caught the attention of the ladies around the school-and it just so happens that Abby Clarkson and her friends ended up favouring him as well." Jared went on.

She didn't know why, but Kylie suddenly shuddered. Memories of the dream she had had hours before flickering through her mind.

Should she have told them about the dream? She doubted her dream's would be any help-probably less than help actually. Maybe even lead them off course of what really was going on. So she trusted that it was best she didn't say anything about it. Even with a touch of doubt circling in her gut.

"But get this-turns out he was getting his way around Abby's whole group. It caused obvious tension to form between them."

"So that's when the game started..." Sebastian murmured knowingly.
