Chapter Three
The next morning started off like it often did-with Kylie running down the street towards her High school; late. This wasn't something that didn't happen often. It happened every day. It wasn't that she got up late, or slept in; but she had to get Michael ready. Everything that seemed to come easy to her, seemed to come hard to him. Every morning she'd wake her brother in order to get him ready for school. But with sleep in his eyes he always begged to sleep in for, "just another minute." Yea, right!
When she did finally manage to get him up she had to dress him, get him to brush his hair and teeth, wash his face, and not only make breakfast, but make him eat his breakfast. These were the theme's that were needed in order for her to keep Michael in her custody, and out of the orphanages hands. These were the things that children needed in order to live a healthy life style, they had said. But she doubted it. Kylie was sure that they were just trying to give her a hard time, and were waiting for her failure. Just yesterday, after dinner with ice cream, she received a call from a social worker, Mary-Anne Burn, otherwise Ms Burn's, and was further warned that if she were late for any more classes, the deal would be sealed. Running to class is what resulted in this threat.
Entering the classroom just as the bell started, Kylie let out a ragged breath of relief. They really were out to get her, and she couldn't do this every morning; hopefully Michael would be a little more lucent tomorrow morning, but she already had a feeling that that wish was already set in stone.
"Ms Anne, how pleasant of you to arrive on time this morning," She heard Ms. Anneis say at the front of the classroom. Her sapphire eyes hidden under her glasses. But she already could tell what were eyes were saying due to the tightened tone in her voice. She was trying to stop herself from saying something; and Kylie hoped she'd never find out what it was. "but would you be so kind as to take a seat?" It wasn't a question, but an order.
Spotting out her friend Elizabeth at the corner of the room flagging her to come sit down, Kylie all but ran towards the seat. Watching Ms Anneis flip her scarlet locks as she turned to the rest of the class-something that Kylie knew from experience Ms Anneis did when she was trying to attract attention away from her face; another thing she did when she didn't want her students, or anyone else, reading her expression.
"I can't believe you made it," whispered the tan girl at her side in awe, "I was sure you weren't going to make it" her baby blue's wide, she began to fiddle with her bleached blonde hair.
"Gee, thanks Liz" Kylie said as she eyed Elizabeth sarcastically. Hoping her sarcasm wasn't dry enough to not be recognised.
She put her hands up in defence, "Hey! I wasn't saying it like it was a bad thing. I'm just saying that it should be a record pretty close to the finish line."
"Yea, well, too close if you ask me."
"Michael was debating whether to wear a blue tee, or a red tee?" Liz guessed jokingly
"Michael was debating on whether he wanted to eat Cheerio's or Captain Crunch. The one debating on what to wear was you."
Liz pressed a hand to her heart in a hurtful manner, "Am I that see-through?"
"Would you mind telling the class what is so interesting, ladies?" Ms Anneis shot, as she glared up down the aisle of tables, in which the class had turned in their seats to focus their attention on the two.
