 Chapter Two:  Michael

Did he just say that he would take the case?

"I said I would take the case." He answered, as though he had picked her brain. His cold voice holding hidden annoyance.

"Case?" She repeated, a dazed expression coming across her face

"I said I would take the case, are you an idiot or something?" He peered, now facing her so that she could notice his eyes watching her curiously. Almost acting as though he wasn't just trying to be rude, but actually questioning if she was retarded. Maybe he was bitter by accident, or maybe, just maybe, he was trying to bring her to her breaking point.

And here I thought that he was a nice person. She said mentally in her head sarcastically.

"And here I thought you were being a nice person for once, Augustus." Said a voice from behind her. Making Kylie turn around quickly to see a man, only a few years older than herself, standing only a few inches away from her. His brown eyes blazed with pure indorsed amusement as he grinned down at her. Making her feel uncomfortable with her height-and she wasn't short-due to his tall physic.

He had to be in his mid twenties, possibly near thirties. But not a day older. His hair, she noticed, looked pretty healthy. Making her somewhat envious to how shinny it looked. Her hair was dark, almost black; making her often have to explain that it wasn't black but brown. His hair wasn't much different from her own, maybe a pinch lighter. Yet hers never looked so pretty. It was an ugly colour; a colour that she felt represented death.

Her brother had gotten her parents hair. With both her mom and dad having blonde hair. Her brother, Michael, had acquired the same trademark features. Face, mouth, nose, and above all else, hair. Sometimes she couldn't help but go sour because she had nothing to compare herself to her parents. She wished that she had something to compare herself to them so that she could say, "Hey! I am related to them. I'm there daughter!"

This guy beside her made her think twice of that.

I thought I had said it out loud... She sighed aloud. Relief flooding through her at the realisation that she hadn't spoken her mind aloud.

"I do not take it into consideration to be kind to imbeciles such as this girl" Augustus said, standing from his seat to walk towards a small kitchen cubical that she hadn't seen when she had entered the room.

"What did you say?" She hissed acidly

"I said that you were an imbecile." He repeated himself coolly.

If it were actually possible for steam to be coming out of your ears, Kylie would be boiling right now. Standing up abruptly with the power of sheer will, she kept hold onto the fact that she had gotten what she wanted. She had gotten his and his brother's agreement on taking the case, and that was what she had come for.

Turning on the edge of her heel, she quickly snapped to face the three of the men in the room and gave a pleasant smile to the man at her side and Sebastian. Flipping a cold gaze matching her farewell towards Augustus, "It was very memorable meeting you Augustus." Turning, and striding away. Hearing small snickers arise from the two as Augustus glared her down, and she walked away unfazed. Augustus, she snorted what is this, a bad remake of 'Count Dracula?'

That monster that she had met in the beginning was probably the brother's lackey; he'd probably get into contact with the school for further information on when to arrive at the school and where to go. She didn't plan on spending another second with Augustus, or his "assistant," if that's what he was.

It was not a question in Kylie's mind that he got his bitter attitude from his boss. Who wouldn't gain such a negative attitude after spending time with someone like him? Even someone as sweet, and kind, and positive, and utterly gorgeous as Sebastian had his limit; and his brother was that limit.

She had done her job, now she could only wait and see how it was carried out.

"Kyle!" a bubbly voice bellowed down the steps of Pineview Elementary. Small fingers wrapped around her waist upon impact of the small form as green eyes gleamed up at her in pure adolescent innocence. Swiping some of the blonde wavy locks out of his face,Kylie felt herself wish that she could go back to the days when the worst that could happen to you was when you got no jam with your Peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

"Michael! I told you not to call me Kyle anymore; it's Kylie. Remember?" Kyle was so mannish, she had no idea where he had gotten the nickname from, "how was your day?" She asked as she gathered the small child up in her arms. Realising as soon as his feet had left the cement that gravity wasn't on her side and her little brother wasn't the little boy she had grown up seeing. He was already six years old.

She now understood what parents meant when they cooed about their children "growing up too fast." She only hoped that she had rightfully given Michael what he needed as a child to enjoy his youth. She knew what it was like to lose your childhood so quickly at such a young age; and she didn't want the same for him.

"I got an A on my spelling test today, Kyle!" he grinned brightly, a small gap in between his teeth visible. The tooth fairy had tried her best and had given him a dollar, which he spent on his lunch like the good little boy Kylie had told him he was. He could tell that money was tight, and he wasn't supposed to sense that. He was too young to worry about money and the ones that were supporting him.

Ignoring the nickname, Kylie gave him a wide excited grin "You did?!" she said excitedly, "You know what that means right?!"

"Ice cream!" He squealed knowingly.

Yes, she was one of those twisted older sisters/moms that didn't spoil the kid rotten with junk food. No. But she did try her best to show how great it was when you earned it. Releasing the small child back onto the freedom of the school playground, the boy trotted away gleefully. Without a fear in his step; Kylie almost felt at peace herself. But soon enough, there would be nothing close to peace.
