(Her POV)

She could see his eyes through the flames. His beautiful gray eyes. More flames rose up behind him, and she vaguely wondered why he wasn’t screaming in agony.

As if hearing her thoughts, his eyes shined with amusement. Her heart beat faster. She needed him now, right now.

She reached out to him, watching as the flames licked at her outstretched arms. She felt no pain. He didn’t make a move to come to her.

Why won’t he come?

Her eyes burned, as she tried not to let the tears fall. He didn’t want her. Why do I  love him when he doesn’t even want me?

She let her arms fall.

(His POV)

He watched her, as she watched him. The fog rose up behind her like an army waiting to defend. Her blue eyes steadily gazed into his, possibly piercing his soul.

How can he ignore the flames like that? Don’t they hurt? He could hear her thoughts, but he wasn’t a mind reader. He could only hear hers, and hers alone.

He almost smiled at that. She’s the only one who could make him smile. He felt her change of mood, right before he saw her reach for him. His heart rate picked up.

No baby, no. I can’t come to you, why don’t you understand?

He saw the agony in her eyes, as she tried not to let the tears fall. She thought: Why do I love him when he doesn’t even want me?

His heart raced, and then stopped and started again painfully. Not want her? How could he possibly not want her?

I love you. Why can’t you realize something so obvious? My hearts is yours... He thought frantically. Im yours.

He watched as she let her arms fall, and slowly started fading away.

 (Miranda's POV)

Do you know that feeling of breathlessness you feel when you’re really close to a fire? I woke up with that exact feeling. I still felt the heat suppressing my lungs, even as I bolted upright.

I desperately wanted to go back to sleep, back to Dessen. I felt the wave of despair wash over me, the same wave I experienced every time I woke up and remembered that he was just a dream. He was just a dream.

In reality I stayed away from boys. Well, people in general. If I don’t get to close...then I’ll never get hurt. At least that’s my philosophy.

And in all honesty, it worked well enough.

I slowly got out of bed and went through my normal routine. It was almost robotic. I sighed as I made my way downstairs. I grabbed an apple, and quickly walked out the door before my parents noticed me.

I was in no mood to talk to them. Not that I ever was anyway.

I walked to my car, and drove to school...just like I did everyday. I found myself daydreaming about Dessen.

Who wasn’t even real. He’s just a great pigment of my overactive imagination. That I desperately wanted to be real. I sighed as I stopped at a red light. I just happened to look over at the car next to mine, and something caught my eye.

Then my eyes proceeded to bug out of my skull. IT WAS HIM. Oh my God, that’s Dessen.

Damnit Jade, breathe breathe. In and out, in and out. As soon as the light changed, I was out of there.

I didn’t even remember the rest of the drive to school, but suddenly I was climbing out of my care and walking towards the front entrance. I was compltely occupied with my thoughts, and didn’t see the foot someone stuck out for me to trip over.

Down I went. I shut my eyes waiting to feel the cement and my face connect, but it never did. I blinked my eyes open. Someone had stopped my fall. My body immediately went on alert.

I was almost afraid to see who caught me. I slowly turned around, seriously dreading who I was about to see. My gaze locked with a pair of steel gray eyes. My breath caught in my chest.
