All I remember are flashes. An explosion. Fire engulfing everything. Landing on the street. Ella coming to my side. Everyone looking at me scared.
Then suddenly, every one of my negative feelings left my body. I stood up slowly and looked around at everyone. Their faces in shock. I realized my mask was gone so I removed my gloves and felt my face. I looked at them all.
"Is something on my face?"
Jules pulled out her canteen and poured the water on the ground, pointing at it. I looked at the water and gasped in shock. My skin was pale. My eyes were white. I was an Immune.
I turned to Ella and she was crying yet smiling. She ran into me at super speed and embraced me. I embraced back. I looked back to see Kent kiss Jules and look back at us. He winked at me.
I pulled back and stared into Ella's pale moon eyes. She stared into mine. I kissed her and suddenly there was a sound from a little girl saying, "Yuck."
We turned to see Mia with a disgusted look on her face.
"Glad I don't have to grow up and do that!"
Ella ran at her and embraced her. Mia chuckled and embraced back. Then an old Immune man limped over to us from the shadows. It was Grandfather. He smiled at the two and they smiled back.
He turned to me and put a hand on my shoulder.
"I have suffered damage to my body that I cannot survive with."
He points to the giant red stain on his shirt.
"But I leave this world happy that our people have a good leader in my place. Thank you Michael. Our people deserve a protector like you!"
Grandfather collapsed and I caught him. He smiled up at me and suddenly his face went slack. He had died. I layed him down and closed his eyes. I stood up and turned around.
The Immune had been watching since Grandfather showed up. I look down at my leg and somehow the bone was back inside my leg. Guess becoming Immune hits a reset button. I step up onto a pile of rubble, overlooking the people, Mia and Ella behind me. I knew what I had to do.
"IMMUNE!"
They all fell silent. The only sounds were the fire and my voice.
"TODAY WE HAVE LOST MORE THAN WE HAD EVER THOUGHT POSSIBLE. OUR HOMES, OUR FAMILIES..."
I turn to Grandfather's body.
"Our friends... But do NOT let that tell you that this world is beyond saving! Whatever the price, we will keep our morals! Rebuild our civilization! And make the world a better place for us all!"
I look down at Kent and Jules.
"Humans and Immune alike! We will live together in peace!"
I take Ella's hand in mine.
"We will love one another! And we will live! For the future! For the people! And for life itself!"
The Immune cheered for me. Kent and Jules as well. I smiled out over them.
"Ella... These are my people now as well..."
I turn to her and take her into my arms, staring into her eyes. Those pale moon eyes I fell in love with the day she brought me into her world.
"Our people. And I promise you, whatever it takes, we will survive."
Mia tugs on my coat and I kneel down to her. She looks at me worryingly.
"Does that mean we can have a happily ever after? Like in the books Grandfather... Used to read to me?"
I nodded.
"Yes we will."
I hugged her
"Yes we will Mia."
I pull away and Mia is smiling.
"Good."
I stand back up and face Ella. She smirks at me.
"Happily ever after, huh?"
I chuckled.
"Yeah I think we deserve that much."
Ella rolls her eyes and kisses me. And suddenly, the whole world was quiet. The End
