I woke up in the middle of the night. It was Marvin's shift but he preferred being outside on the edge of the broken window to watch. I went to lay back down when I thought I saw a little girl watching me from behind a wall. I got up and looked at her. She ran.
"Hey!" I whispered loudly.
I ran after her, grabbing my M4. I ran to the edge she peeked around but no one was there. I looked down the hall to see her go out the door. Into the street. I followed and got to the door to see her run into an alley. I followed her but then she was gone.
"Huh. Weird."
I assumed maybe I was seeing things. Stress has hit me hard these days. I turn to head back and see a deadie in my path. He stares at me, able to see me but unable to tell if I'm another deadie or food. I raise my gun slowly. The deadie starts to get closer.
I wait. My gun is loud. It would attract any swarm nearby. So I waited. The deadie was about three feet in front of me when it stopped.
It stared at me and I stared back. I prayed to God this thing left me alone. Then my heart sank when it shrieked. I fired my gun, taking the deadies head clean off but the damage was done. I heard the shrieks of a swarm coming to my location.
I looked around but the alley was a dead end.
"Up here!" I looked up to see the little girl from earlier. "Quick!"
She dropped a rope and even though I doubted her strength, I climbed up. I got to the top right as the swarm went into the alley but they could not find me. Not very bright ones. I turned to the girl to thank her but her pupils were gone. Just white eyes in sockets.
"Deadie."
I aimed my gun at her and suddenly I was knocked out.
