Between ups and downs the friendship continued to walk.  They crossed the crust, passed through the mantle and it was time to head for the core.

The core of the problem, but digging deeper wouldn't be pretty.  It would not be comfortable and would allow the near-perfect harmony between Carina and Maya to have a declining.

The doctor had have such a hard week.  More emergencies than usual at work.  DeLuca was reluctant to accept professional help with his episodes.  They were still subtle, but Carina recognized them as a detector and got worried.  At home, she thought she was doing well in her relationship with the firefighter in the little journey they had started.  Until that day.  And the succession of disastrous events it had brought her.

It was Maya who cut some vegetables this time.  As Carina watched her.  The concentrated face stole a few sighs.  The blue eyes was attached to her. Maya got embarrassed at some point and the doctor smiled.

- We hardly had time to talk in the last few days... How have you been?

- A lot of calls.  Newborns being left in front of the station.  Disagreements in the team.  Bureaucracies...

- Wow.

- Yeah... Nothing as interesting as seeing babies flying out of the body.

- Maya - Exclaims laughing - First that babies don't fly out of the body.  They slowly slide out of the vagina. And second, what a most insensitive thing to say – She takes a cube of carrot that the other one had just cut, throwing at her.

- My bad, Doctor...

- What about your mother?

- I haven't spoken to her since that last meeting - She shrugs.

- And... Don't you think you should try?

- Why?

- Because she is your mother and is going through a difficult time.

- That's not my problem.  If she can't deal with a strong temper and some raised voices... The choice is hers.

Carina had a major flaw or quality, depending on the point of view.  When she had a truth in mind, she couldn't keep it to herself.  And it was not going go be different with Maya.

- I understand that it's difficult, but...  Don't you think she can be hurt and have real reasons to be hurt and that there is a little truth in what she says, Maybe...

-Stop - she changes her voice, dropping the knife on the board abruptly - Please ... - This time her tone was lower, but still contained a visible anger.

Even fearing her friend's reactions, Carina decides to continue.

- Remember my bipolar father?  My little brother unfortunately inherited the bipolar gene and...

- I... I don't know what kind of parallel are you trying to create... But I don't want to fight with you - Maya says trying to control her voice - And there are no mental illnesses in my family - shr concluded harshly.

- I don't want to fight either.  Maya... I just want... I just wanted to come to the conclusion that the human brain is fantastic, but it can also be devious.  With or without mental illness.  And what you're experiencing right now feels like denial to me and maybe because you're so bright and smart yoy can't recognize that you might be in denial that both you and your mother and brother could have faced abuse.

- I don't want to talk about it - Screams - There is no abuse.  He never hit us.  He...

- This is not the only way to abuse someone, Maya.  My dad never hit me or my brother either, but that doesn't mean he didn't mentally abused us.  Mental and verbal abuse exist.
