Kat gazed at the blue water. 'My first competition' she thought, 'wow!' Kat was a surfer. Though she was only fourteen, she knew this was her life. She was a beautiful young girl, with long brown hair and tan skin. She had just gotten rid of braces, and her teeth were flawless. "And a score of 96 for Rebecca Marsh!" The announcer said into the mic. "Beat that!" Becky snarled as she walked by. Becky had been Kat's worst enemy since the second grade. Becky was a surfer as well, and Kat knew, that it would be hard to beat a score of 96, but, if she could find a big enuf wave... "Don't let her get to you." A voice said from behind. Kat turned, startled, but felt relived to find her best friend, Jason, standing behind her. "Hey Jase." She said. Kat took a deep breath, and she could feel butterfly's in her stomach, as the announcer called her name. She took a step toward the roaring waves. How did she get here? This is how

"Mama?" Three year old Kat asked. "Not now sugar berry." Her mom answered. "I'm busy" "okay" Kat turned and ran towards her dad's office "daddy?" "Not now baby pumpkin" her father answered. "Daddy's on the phone." He shut the door. The little surfer turned away sadly. "Cute names won't make her happy!" Kat looked up, to see her grandma, smiling down at her. "Nanna!" Kat screamed, and jumped into the loving arms of her playmate. "C'mon my little surfer girl!" Grandma said. "The pool is waiting!" "Yay!" Kat ran into her beachy room and grabbed her new pink rash guard and surf shorts. Since Kat lived in Colorado, it took a lot of effort to get to the beach, so Kat liked to spend her time at the public pool. When her nana was sick, or unavailable to take her, Kat would sit on her bed, and pretend she lived on the beach. That was her dream, so she did her best to make her room feel like a beach house. The walls in her room were light blue, and she had stickers of hibiscus flowers scattered around. In one corner, Kat had a beautiful birdbath with fish in it. Her fish didn't last very long though. Poor Kat didn't know why. She gave them all of the love and attention they needed, right? Her Mama had giver her a tube with a fish on it, and inside were little flakes of who knows what! She said it was yummy food, but it was gross! Kat loved lemons, so every night, she would squeeze lemon juice into her fishes home, because no one cared about her her babies. Above Kat's closet, she had a pink and purple surfboard. It wasn't real though. 'Someday' she thought, 'I'll have a real surfboard up there!' " Kat honey!" Her grandma called. "Coming!" She called back, and rushed out the door to meet her grandma. The day was beautiful! Kat couldn't understand why her parents always stayed inside! Her nana rented a blue and tan boogie board for Kat to use, because she preferred to be above the water. There were no waves in the pool, but Kat could pretend. She imagined she was paddling out to sea on her own surfboard. A giant wave came rushing toward her. She used all of her strength to push up. She stood fearlessly on her board. "Whoa!!" Kat shrieked, as she lost her balance. She fell on a little boy about her age. "Owe" Kat moaned. The boy popped out of the water. "Are you okay?" He asked. "Yes" Kat answered confidently. "Good" the boy introduced himself "I'm Jason, and I'm four year old!" Kat smiled "I'm Kat. And I only tree" she said, it was hard for her to pronounce 'th' " but someday, I'll be the same age as you!" Jason smiled back. "No silly! When you are four, I'll be five!" "Oh" Kat said. "But I'll still grow up!"

Kat was right, she did grow up. And as she did, she longed more and more for her own real surfboard. "HAPPY NINTH BIRTHDAY SWEETIE!" Kat's mom said excitedly. "We got you a present honey." He dad handed her a wrapped present shaped like a surfboard. Could it be? She ripped open the paper and "pop!" Out came a large, pink and purple... "Stuffed cat?" "SURPRISE!" Her parents screamed. Kat forced a smile. Her parents left her room, and Kat stuffed her head in her green surfboard pillow. Was it not obvious?!?! Yes, the toy was adorable, and yes, at least her parents remembered her special day (her seventh birthday was sadly forgotten) but she really, really, wanted a surfboard! She had thought, maybe, just maybe, this could be her lucky day. She was nine!! She was responsible enough, right? 'I guess not' she thought. A small ringing sound came from the cats front foot. Kat lifted her head and saw a pocket on the paw. She reached inside, and found a small black phone. Kat answered. "Um, hello?" "HEY BABY! WE LOVE YOU!" Her mom yelled. "Love you guys too." Kat said. " we gave your new number to your whole class!" Her dad said. "Yay" Kat hung up. 'Great.' She thought 'now, Becky can tease me even more' she slammed her face back into the pillow. "RING! RING!" Her phone rang again. Kat sprung up and answered. "H - he - hello?" "Happy birthday!" Becky giggled "did you get your own board yet?" "No" "oh! Well, I got mine two years ago! So, when I move to San Diego in a month, I can train to compete!" "Mhm" Kat said "oh, don't be jealous! I also get to see Jase when he comes down for three weeks every summer to see his grandma. He's cute you know." "Sure" Kat answered, barely paying attention. "Okay, well goodbye!" "Bye" Kat turned to hang up, but Becky stopped her. "Oh and one last thing," "ya" "enjoy your cat, Kat!" Kat hung up. The pillow was waiting. She flopped down on the pillow. She stayed, face in pillow, for what felt like eons. Finally, a small knock patted on her door. Kat didn't budge. The door creaked open, and someone walked in. The figure sat down on her bed and patted her head. "I heard about the cat" it was Jase. "Do you want it?" Kat asked handing it to Jase, but still keeping her head in the pillow."na!" He teased. "I think it likes you better." She groaned. "Hey," Jase said "don't be so down" Kat sat up, and looked into his milky brown eyes. So kind. He smiled gently, his dark hair, perfect. Kat thought back to her conversation with Becky. She thought of her words 'he's cute you know!' Oh, Kat knew. Jase slid something heavy, hard, and smooth into Kat's lap. She looked down. In her hands was a brand new surfboard! It was dark brown with a pink stripe down the middle. Along the edge, there were the words "To: Kat - From: Jason" Kat smiled the biggest, brightest smile ever! She jumped up and tackled Jase into a hug. "I knew you would love it!" Jase grinned "well duh!" Kat laughed. Jase got up, and replaced the fake pink and purple surfboard with the real one. Jase turned to leave, and as he closed the door, he gave Kat a small wink.
