Kat looked at where Mara was pointing. The fins didn't look right. "Someone did this" Mara said "it happened to me once. It was the day of the comp I was participating in a few years ago. Thankfully, I caught it before it was my turn. The judge tracked down who it was and disqualified them, but that's not the point. The point is that the board was rigged by someone who knows you well." "Ya," Jase chimed in "someone who knows your routine" "someone who wants me to drop out of the surf club" Kat's phone rang and she answered. "Hello?" "Guess what Kat Kat?" It was Becky "I got into the surf club! Some lame girl dropped out because of an injury! The spot is mine!" Becky hung up. Kat looked at Jase. "Becky took my spot." Kat burst back into tears. Not Becky! Why was life so unfair? Kat cried into Jase's shoulder, and he and Mara helped comfort her.
The next day came, and Kat couldn't help but think of the surf meet. She needed to get out. She put on her favorite peach blouse and jean shorts, and went for a walk on the beach. The day was perfect. Kat enjoyed the fresh air, and kinda went into her own little world. She bumped into something and fell. "Sorry!" Someone said. 'Great' she thought 'now I feel bad' "sorry, I wasn't watching where I was..." Kat stopped as the figure helped her up. It was a boy. A cute boy. Even cuter than Jase, and that's saying something! "Um, hi." Kat managed to say, after she realized she had been staring at him. Oops. She couldn't help it. His hair was dirty blond, and he had the perfect completion. His eyes. Oh his eyes were like emeralds, shining. He was so handsome. "Hey." He answered her. "I wasn't watching were I was going either." He paused. "I'm Michael." "Kat" Kat said. Still staring. She liked how he didn't have the surfer style hair (long, maybe down to the shoulders) but how it was nicely cut and styled. He was taller and stronger than Jase, and, like I said earlier, much more handsome. She liked him. A lot. "Do you live around here?" He asked. "Ya, just down that way." Kat pointed down the beach, to the condos. "I live down there too." Michael said. "We're you headed somewhere, or can I walk you home?" "I... I... Was headed home now." 'Ya' she thought. ' that sounded believable.' The two walked down the beach together, and Kat learned a lot about him. He was fifteen, he liked to surf, he has a dog, and his favorite color was green. As they approached Kat's house. The two traded numbers. "Can I see you tomorrow?" He asked. "Sure" Kat answered. "Around noon?" "Good plan."
Kat stood on the beach. She was a bit early. It was eleven fifty five, and she was to meet Michael at noon. The air was salty, but Kat enjoyed it. Soon Kat spotted Michael coming towards her. His hair was still perfect. "Hey." He said when he reached her. "Wow. You look beautiful." Kat felt her cheeks burn bright red. "Thank you." The two chatted for a while, both happy to have the other one there. Soon, Kat heard footsteps coming up behind her. "Hey Kat." It was Jase. "Oh, hi Jase." She answered. Jase looked at Michael, obviously thinking what Kat thought. 'He is way more handsome than me.' "Who is this?" "Oh!" Kat said, remembering that the two don't know each other. "Jase, this is Michael, Michael, this is Jase." "You have an amazing girlfriend" Michael told Jase. "Oh, Kat's not my girlfriend. Just... Friend." There was a hint of disappointment in Jase's voice, but Kat didn't here it. "Ok, Kat, can you help me." "Got to go Michael, see you later." Kat turned to leave, but Michael stopped her. "Don't go Kat." He said. "Hang out with me, not him." Kat was surprised. Jase was mad. "Hey, slow down." Jase went into his protective mode. "C'mon Kat." Michael said. "This guy is a weakling." Jase stood taller. "Knock it off pretty boy." Jase scolded. "Or what?" The two looked at each other. Michael grabbed Jase and held him, so that he couldn't move. Kat ran over and took Jase from Michael. She held him back. She had one arm over his shoulder and chest, the other was under his arm and clutching his shoulder. "C'mon Kat." Jase said, still keeping his eyes on Michael. "Let's go." He turned to leave, bringing Kat with him.
