Kat's world was destroyed. Her best friend was a traitor. It was more than she could bear. For the next few days, Kat tried her best to avoid Jase. It was easy to avoid him in real life, but he was always on her mind. The ocean was calm, but Kat's mind was raging sea. The waves weren't big enough to surf, so Kat was even more restless. It was the Saturday after the incident, which happened on Tuesday, and Kat was in the beach watching the waves. 'I might be able to surf these' she thought, as the waves grew bigger. She looked at her board. It was the one Jase had given her. He was everywhere. Kat took a deep breath and slowly let it out. She heard footsteps coming from her left side, and turned to find a girl, about her age walking towards her. "Hi" the girl said. "Your Kat. Right?" Kat sighed. There was only one way the girl could know her. "You saw my wipeout?" "Ya" the girl seemed nice. "I'm Mara" she said. Mara was a tall, thin girl, with skin a bit lighter than Kat's. Her hair was straight and shoulder length, with a milky, caramel, color. "I surf, and I know when someone is good. That's you. Your really good, but you got distracted. By what?" Kat felt different about Mara. Something about her made Kat want to tell her everything. So she did. Kat told Mara about the board, and her ninth birthday. She told Mara about the surf shack, and the tv, and Becky. When she was done, her eyes were full of tears, and she was shaking. "I can't imagine how that would feel." Mara comforted Kat. "That's hard" Kat cried into Mara's shoulder. Mara was wearing a tankini with surf shorts, so it didn't help muffle Kat's sobs. Once Kat had pulled herself together, she noticed that the waves had gotten big enough to surf. Mara was ahead of her. "I know I'm no Jase, but those waves look sick! You up for a ride?" Kat smiled. "Sure. Just, let me get my spare board." The water was amazing, and the new tricks Mara taught her were some of the coolest ones she had ever learned. Kat never wanted to stop. But all good things come to and end, and the end had come. Kat said goodbye to Mara, and they planned to meet up together the next day. She grabbed her spare board and headed home. Kat had bought the spare with her own money. It was tan, with an orange hibiscus flower in the middle. Kat was back to her normal self, and was trotting home happily, when a voice called out to her. Kat's happiness turned to blood boiling ravage, when she placed the voice. It was Jase. Kat turned. "what do YOU want?" Kat growled. "Can't you just talk to you new girlfriend? I mean, you see something in her that I obviously don't." Kat continued walking. "Kat wait I..." Jase was cut off "what can a little girl do? Why don't you talk to kids your age?" Jase tried again. "Please Kat..." Kat was determined not to let Jase win. "Becky is a much better surfer than me, and her blond hair is so beautiful. I guess I'm just an outcast!" "Kat stop!" Jason couldn't take it any longer. Kat sighed and looked Jase in the eyes. The eyes she once loved looking into. "Haven't you hurt my feelings enough?" "I'm sorry Kat. I am. Really." "Jase, you ditched my for my worst enemy. I thought you were my friend." Jase insisted that Kat listened. "Please, please Kat. I'm sorry." "Sorry doesn't change what you did." "Kat I'll do anything! Please!" Jase paused "I'll, I'll break up with Becky." Kat was touched, but her heart was hard. "No, keep her. You two look good together. I'll just, be the girl who wiped out because her best friend ditched her for a brat." That comment stung, and a heartbroken Jase headed towards home. He looked at the beautiful girl who was once his best friend. The way she talked to him hurt, and a bit of Jason's heart was hardened.
